When it comes to Jennifer Lawrence’s off-duty style, we’re all ears …
As celebrity style goes, Jennifer Lawrence has been garnering favour with the fashion crowd thanks to her meticulously good taste when it comes to off-duty dressing. Of course, Lawrence doesn’t do it alone. Most recently, she’s worked with celebrity stylists Ryan Hasting and Jamie Mizrahi: the latter of which has been credited with taking Lawrence’s look from vanilla territory to a who’s who of quiet luxury buys – think: The Row, Toteme, Loro Piana and La Ligne – mixed with vintage and casual pieces. The whole vibe is that of ‘I just rolled out of bed, but I look effortlessly cool’. Of course, we’re taking ample screenshots.
During a recent appearance on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast Lawrence cited a more down to earth topic: her love of organisation. “I do a lot of closet clean outs, I think living in New York helps with that, I don’t have a lot of excess stuff that confuses me,” she said. “I loosely plan my outfits mentally. I take my kid to school and I know that I’m going to get photographed.”
And, while it could be easy to pooh-pooh Lawrence’s style as hinging on ‘rich lady’ fashion brands, there is an art to her outfit execution. It’s also refreshing to see a celebrity actually wear their clothes on repeat; Lawrence genuinely seems to enjoy playing with fashion. (Her tongue-in-cheek wearing of a baseball cap from the Twilight franchise – no doubt a nod to her Die My Love co-star Robert Pattinson – is a case in point.) High-end buys, like cashmere jumpers or big-ticket designer coats, are tempered by practical footwear such as Adidas trainers, clogs by German brand Haflinger or a pair of Uggs (I for one, am glad these once-naff shoes are being green-lit as, with the current doomsday weather, I’m craving practical footwear). While boyish, low-slung jeans are offset by pretty frog-button jackets that have a vintage feel, as well as satin ballet flats or slip-ons that Lawrence somehow manages to wear while cycling a Citi Bike. Some shoes are so flimsy, they resemble hotel slippers (again, adding to the louche, stealth-wealth of it all).
One accessible way into the look is via a V-neck knit (get one for under €100 at COS), layered with a white T-shirt underneath and teamed with a pair of statement trousers; Lawrence loves Loewe’s red track bottoms, or a pair of wide-leg trousers, both in a statement pop of red. While, sadly, the handbag selection may remain on the wish-list side of things – see Lawrence’s host of prestige hold-alls, pictured below, which includes a vintage Hermès Kelly and an extremely rare bag, the Lady, by The Row – we’ll admire how she uses a structured bag to add gravitas to an otherwise loose outfit. The bottom line? Big brands aside, perhaps what’s so appealing is that Lawrence masters looking comfortable without compromising on polish (hello: slob chic).
Lawrence also offered up this tip on balancing baggy shapes without letting them swamp your body or look unflattering. “Big goes with big. And if you’re going to have a baggy and tight, you cannot ever have tight on the bottom, baggy on the top, or you’ll look like a lamp. You can have baggy on the bottom and tight on the top but you cannot do the other way around,” she said.

This old hat? It’s Loro Piana. Lawrence’s double-breasted coat is by Finnish brand (and glossy favourite) Almada Label. For a similar style, try The Landskein.
A flash of leopard print, delivered via a structured bag, adds polish to long, loose layers.
As well as investing in a good coat – this leopard one is by New York label La Ligne – Lawrence knows the power of a pop of red to uplift any outfit.
A vintage Hermès Kelly bag, worn open and chock-full, nods to the current messy-girl aesthetic. It’s teamed here with an embroidered ivory coat that has a vintage feel.
Key to the look is cashmere in muted tones that have ultimate flexibility. Think: navy, camel, black and off-white. Lawrence’s round-neck jumper, above, is from The Row but for some alternatives shop our edit of ultimate cashmere buys here.
Ugly shoes? We love them – and so does Lawrence. These embroidered clogs by German brand Haflinger add an air of off-duty cool to any look.
