50+ Ways To Update Your Spring Look

The ultimate list of outfit inspiration for the new season …

In the vein of woven leather bags by Dragon Diffusion and Bottega Veneta, this braided nappa leather tote is certainly capacious. Brown large braided nappa leather tote bag, €399, at Massimo Dutti.

A trending pop of red is the key to brightening up a transitional outfit. We can see this pairing perfectly with jeans and a trench. Red French terry cotton polo shirt, €59; www.arket.com.

It’s still jumper season. Luckily, we never tire of a fisherman-inspired cable-knit. Ecru Evan cable-knit jumper, €120; www.sezane.com.

Those searching for an on-trend pair of boat shoes will appreciate how these loafers nod to the look, sans the Miu Miu price tag. Brown leather driving loafers, €74.99, at H&M.

When it comes to in-demand denim, straight-leg jeans are going nowhere. We love the wash of this organic cotton pair by COS. Dark blue Facade organic cotton straight-leg jeans, €99, at COS.

A statement shirt does so much heavy lifting during spring months. It’s the perfect accompaniment to jeans and a spring coat, and also looks great with stirrup leggings and loafers. The update: eschew blue cotton poplin for a linen shirt in a dark hue such as navy or black. You’ll wear it with jeans or white linen trousers, and with light-weight shorts come summertime. Navy recycled linen oversized shirt, €79, at COS.

Find the right pair of wide-leg jeans (we always seek out a leg shape that’s on the straight side of wide) and they’re a veritable wardrobe hero. The update: pale and light washes abound for spring, but try a rich indigo shade to offset white blouses and T-shirts. Deep blue wide-leg jeans, €120; www.sezane.com.

An elegant blazer is a key part of any capsule wardrobe. While blacks and creams excel for occasionwear, there’s something about a beige blazer for daywear that consistently looks sharp. The update: this season, blazer shapes are expanding, from collarless to conservative styles that button (nearly) all the way up. Beige linen flecked blazer, €169, at Massimo Dutti.

A great trench coat will always come into its own at this time of year. Even better if it’s got interesting details such as beautiful lining, a hood or a neck-tie. The update: this season, opt for a cropped version with a voluminous silhouette to play with proportion. Beige cropped trench coat, €179; www.arket.com.

A capacious bag has fast become a wardrobe status piece. This season is no different as brands double down on roomy totes in luxe fabrications, meaning you can look good and fit the kitchen sink. The update: while we love brown suede totes, we’re plumping for a woven leather style to bring some new texture to our outfits. Brown Deliberate extra large woven shoulder bag, €199, at Dune.

Bleached denim is a favourite for SS25 with high-end and mid-range brands alike leaning into light, washed out colourways. Light blue The Classic denim shirt, €205; www.withnothingunderneath.com.

As we approach spring, shacket (that is, shirt-cum-jacket) season is soon to be in full swing. The utilitarian style of this denim over-shirt is softened by its dainty tie-details. Blue denim over-shirt with pockets, €89; www.arket.com.

We’ve noticed style influencers sashaying around in the Lino trousers, a new high-waisted style from It brand Sézane. Indigo Lino denim troursers with slanted pockets, €120; www.sezane.com

We can’t think of a better transitional buy than a denim midi-skirt. Team it with knitwear and boots now, and sandals and a tank top come summer. Blue midi skirt with elasticated waist, €89, at COS.

If you’re going to invest in a new pair of jeans, the fit has to be par excellence. We’ve heard good things about the Taylor, a straight-leg pair of jeans with a cropped hem, from Copenhagen brand Skall Studio. Light blue Taylor organic cotton jeans, €285 at Slow Street.

Fashion (and beauty) is leaning into food lately. The paler the colour, the more the theme develops, with blazers in butter yellow, vanilla and salt white dominating. A little bit vintage, a lot now. Perhaps it’s because their fit – cinched at the waist – is so flattering. Or maybe it’s because the button-up style doesn’t require anything underneath: it is at once a light jacket and top in one. Spot the blazer of the moment paired with straight-leg jeans and loafers on the street style set. Or with demure white poplin skirts for a look with effortless polish. Shop the best neutral collarless blazers for spring below.

A striking red cardigan is a veritable ‘It’ piece. This cable-knit style from Alexa Chung’s collaboration with Barbour is highly-covetable. Red Gail cable-knit lambswool cardigan, Barbour, €178; www.flannels.ie.

A neat, button-up cardigan is not only handy for stashing in your bag, it also happens to be very on-trend for SS25. Team yours with a trench coat. Light beige merino wool cardigan, €69; www.arket.com.

Make like Gen Z and embrace a quirky knit, like a sweater vest. Wear with statement jeans and trainers for ultimate style kudos. Buttercup yellow Luna wool-cashmere vest, €129.95; www.irelandseyeknitwear.com.

Nothing is more of the moment than a knitted polo top. Style it with straight-leg jeans and sandals for an insouciant outfit. Grey marl knitted sweater, €79.95, at Massimo Dutti

Embrace the balletic look with an off-the-shoulder cardigan – it’ll make the perfect addition to your spring capsule. Light beige mohair-blend cardigan, €59.99, at H&M.

More polished than the fisherman aesthetic, which hinges upon low-key staples like rain macs and cable-knit jumpers, spring’s maritime mood leans into sailorcore. On the runway for SS25 – from Ralph Lauren and Erdem to Max Mara – there were multiple nautical nods, with sailor hats, bibs, and polished brass all on show. Sailorcore is trickling down to how we shop, too: fashion index Lyst has reported that searches for Breton stripes are up 388 per cent this quarter.

What’s trending now? We love Cali-cool brand Dôen’s take on the look, with linen tops and mini shift dresses, which you can picture Kate Moss wearing with ballet flats. Add a pair of sailor trousers to your wishlist: a timeless classic that pairs well with both crisp shirting and a great T-shirt, especially from French labels Sézane and Claudie Pierlot. A final note: get on board with boat shoes as the most novel way to pledge your allegiance to the sailorcore look.

Find your fix with a fresh striped shirt, replete with feminine puff sleeves, care of Balzac Paris. Sézane has reworked its viral Clyde trench coat in a delectable new gingham pattern for spring. And Paris footwear brand Bobbie has finally launched at Seagreen, with their leather loafers completing your capsule wardrobe. Shop our favourite new pieces below.

Add some zhuzh to the most neutral of outfits with a pair of metallic flats – perfect for daywear and beyond. Metallic Mary Jane leather flats, €169; www.arket.com.

The trend for mesh ballerinas is still going strong for spring. A zinging red tone makes them feel less like a basic, more like a distinctive wardrobe staple. Red Landon mesh ballet flats, Loeffler Randall, €240; www.net-a-porter.com.

A cult buy for the season ahead, Prada’s triangular logo leather ballet flats are on many a wishlist for SS25. Black nappa leather ballet flats, Prada, €850, at Brown Thomas.

We’ve been waxing lyrical about brown suede bags for some time – it’s the accessories trend that keeps on giving.

What’s new now? Bags are shrinking and enlarging. Small bags such as pochettes and cross-bodies are perfect micro versions, while bowling bags are giving style and structure to heaving carry-alls.

Top of our wishlist is the Norma suede bag by Danish brand LIÉ STUDIO, while on the high street Zara’s asymmetric bag is striking.

Polished and practical, shop an edit of the best suede bags below.

Once a humble spring buy, the trench coat has been elevated to a seasonal must-have, with designers and brands issuing trench coats with as much style kudos (and demand) as an ‘It’ bag or trending pair of trainers.

Trench coats for SS25 deal in extremes. Cropped styles are permeating (we love how Sézane issued an update of its beloved Clyde trench coat for the season ahead). On the other end of the scale, XL lengths are the key to making your trench coat look ultra-expensive. Although, it needn’t come at too high a price tag: see the below long trench by H&M, which punches above its weight.
