Fashion has flitted between so many iterations of ‘it’ bag: crescent shaped cross-bodies that go viral, anagram basket bags, structured totes made with such rigour they’ve got an architectural leaning. However, soft suede bags – in shades ranging from mocha and biscuit to chocolate – reign supreme right now. In some ways, The Row sparked the trend. Its Soft Margaux bag, a softly structured top handle bag, which is a sell out, is the definition of modern luxury: roomy, polished and perfectly slouchy. Think of it as a relaxed take on a Birkin, without any of the hard edges or the storied snootiness (although not without the price tag, The Margaux is priced at a cool €5,410).

It’s all about brown suede XL bags for SS24

What’s in now? Possibly, a dash of practicality. Capacious bags in brown, simple styles that are without too much adornment, pockets, or fuss, are big news. These XL bags, which once would have been relegated to ‘work bag’ status, have a new verve thanks to the decadent details and luxurious finishes brands – from high street to high end – are rolling out to make them all the more enticing. Plus, the fact that they have celebrity endorsement doesn’t hurt. See Jennifer Lawrence, pictured in the original Margaux bag in leather by The Row on the streets of New York, or Mary Kate Olsen, who put the nail in the coffin of dainty holdalls by hauling her belongings around in not one, but two, roomy totes whilst dashing between fashion appointments.

While a brown leather bag is always in fashion, there’s something about the latest suede versions, and the rich, caramel-y tones they appear in this season, that feels like the last word in decadence. They’re practical, super soft and they look good: they don’t exactly need a hard sell. Our advice? If you’re not ready for a huge investment, look to mid range brands like Jigsaw, Hereu and, on the high street, Zara, Massimo Dutti and Arket. Do as Swedish tastemaker Fanny Ekstrand does and pair yours with a statement faux fur coat, dark hued straight leg jeans and black loafers. Shop a selection of styles we love, below.
