Try This At Home: Beauty Trends From Runway To Reality

The most exciting new season beauty looks, from high-shine lips to smokey grey eyes – and how to translate them from the catwalk to real life …

This autumn sees a return to elegance, with an overt healthiness – which translates to the freshest-looking skin and wind-chilled cheeks. Revisit a face oil to get that glow from your skincare (liquid highlighters will also help). Add a velvety eyeliner, and you’re good to go: black liner, as done to perfection at the Dior show, adds an edge and some attitude to a pared-back, luminous complexion (enhanced with skincarefirst formulas). Talk about easy, quick and striking. Vampish ultra-glossy lip colours also make a welcome comeback. More of a challenge for some of us is high-shine hair (a nourishing hair oil, such as Restore Hair & Scalp oil by Irish brand Forest Mist, could be a good investment). Most of all, this season is about swerving algorithm-driven identikit beauty, and embracing a more individual, laidback and creative personal style that doesn’t demand hours of our time. Here are some of our favourite AW25 beauty looks, as a starting point … @sarahhalliwellbeauty

Véronique Leroy

Slick Back

On the runway: There were nostalgic references for hair, from the 1990s-style blunt bob at Calvin Klein to the sleekness of the slicked-back, high-shine hair at Acne and Issey Miyake.

How to wear: Stock up on hair gel – that 1980s power dressing staple. Try a smoothedback ponytail, as at Roksanda, or a side parting with a glossy bun, as at Fendi.

Stella McCartney

Vinyl Lips

On the runway: Brace yourself for a high-shine “vinyl” lip, as seen at Simone Rocha and Tom Ford. Bold berry lips also stole the show at Carolina Herrera, as did a “latex” finish at Conner Ives.

How to wear: If a dramatic statement glossy lip feels too full-on, try a lip stain for colour, topped with a gloss for hydration. Something balmy and soft but bright is always eye-catching, as seen at Stella McCartney. Liquid Lipstick Vinyl Glow in Scarlet River, Byredo, €48, at SpaceNK.

Tory Burch

Silver Linings

On the runway: Ice-cold, frosty tones at shows including Richard Quinn and Tory Burch brought a big chill to AW25 looks. Smokey grey winged eyes at Chanel, Jil Sander and Elie Saab added cool drama.

How to wear: Try a pale dovegrey colour wash on eyelids. Use metallic tones to put a silvery twist on the classic smokey eye, as seen at Altuzarra. The simplest way? Add a metallic accent to the inner eye, for a point of interest on an otherwise bare face. Pale pink lips add a 1960s vibe. Eye Palette in Super Neutral, Charlotte Tilbury, €55.37; www.cultbeauty.com.

Dior

Line Up

On the runway: Eyeliner is your key tool this season, to create wings of inky black (as at Jil Sander) and to outline your eyes, as at Marni and Isabel Marant.

How to wear: Load dark liner onto waterline, paired with groomed brows and a hint of gloss on eyelids. The tiniest flick of colour on the inner eye, as seen at Dior, looks delicate but strong on bare, satin skin. Silk to Set eyeliner in Spiced Pecan, €18; www.hildunbeauty.com.

Roll With It

On the runway: Bedhead hair is back (hurray!). Think tousled, textured hair, from soft waves at Michael Kors to the soft, gloriously undone look at Prada.

How to wear: Incorporate texture – from crimping (at Erdem) to soft and natural bohemian waves, as at Chloé. To help create volume and bounce, rollers are the answer; call it the America’s Sweethearts effect (all that big hair). Experiment too with a deep side parting with tousled hair, as at Prabal Gurung.

Carolina Herrera

Soft Lips

On the runway: The big focus is on eyes, so keep lips soft and natural, as at Carolina Herrera.

How to wear: Look to create a soft blur finish that looks fresh against bare matte skin, with balmy and fresh skin-tone shades. Try a fresh glowing lip stain or balm, such as Dior Lip Glow Butter. Soleil Lip Balm in Jetset, Tom Ford, €47, at counters nationwide.

Julie De Libran

Chilled Cheeks

On the runway: The idea of wind-flushed cheeks pairs well with this season’s cool tones. A healthy flush, as if you’ve just stepped off a ski slope. There was balmy highlighter at Gucci and flushed, healthy cheeks at Erdem.

How to wear: A walk on the pier should do it! Or tap a liquid blush high up on cheekbones (rather than apples of cheeks – it gives you a lift). We love Trinny London’s silky Miracle Halo in soft pink Candlelight. Colour Wash liquid blush, Victoria Beckham, €51.

Stella McCartney

Satin Skin

On the runway: Skin this season looks fresh and cool, as at Victoria Beckham, with a satin finish. See also Emilia Wickstead and Stella McCartney for inspiration. Think tons of hydration and a satin, glowy radiant finish.

How to wear: For skin like this, it’s all about the prep. We’re seeing a return to oils to help create that glow. At Chloe, Augustinus Bader Face Oil helped to create the glowing skin, while Eve Lom Renewal Treatment Oil captured the glow at Emilia Wickstead. Prep skin with a hydrating face mask (try Ayu’s Radiant Skin Mask). The Face Oil, Augustinus Bader, €195; www.dublinandcorkdutyfree.ie.

Chocolate Nails

On the runway: With brown dominating as autumn’s fashion neutral, there were tones of creamy mocha, cocoa and chestnut in make-up and nails, too.

How to wear: A pinky-brown mani feels classy and understated. Chanel’s cult Particulière has always been the one to beat. Or go fully caffeineated with 14 Day Mani’s Mocha dark chocolate polish (€11). Natural Origin Nail Polish in Mocha Mousse, Inglot, €19; www.inglotcosmetics.com.
