Another reason to love autumn. Victoria Beckham’s own-name brand, founded in 2019, opens its first Irish counter, complete with make-up, skincare and perfume, at Brown Thomas this month. As the designer celebrated a big birthday in April, I was interested to ask if her attitude towards beauty has changed as she enters her 50s. “Less is more,” she says. “Recently, I’ve found that I am just wearing concealer and skipping foundation, I like the freshness it brings to my skin. Also, I do like to try new approaches to make-up. I think it’s important to not get into a rut, and to experiment. I love looking back at my past beauty and hair looks, living through all these experiences. Even though I’ve had a similar beauty and hair look for the last few years, I do constantly make tweaks, such as a shade of eye pencil.”

Beckham’s style and savvy is evident across the collection. “I was very particular about what I wanted – it always comes down to what I desire and cannot find.” Beckham plays to her strengths, delegating the science side to experts, rather than just marketing something pretty and fluffy that people will buy because her name is attached to it. “Five years ago, when I launched Beauty, I was going to start with foundation – that’s what I wanted for myself. But I couldn’t compete on the science front so I put it on pause,” she explains.

That’s why Beckham’s skincare – such as The Cell Primer Moisturiser (from €70 for 15ml), a beautiful hydrator/primer – is created in collaboration with Leipzig-based skin wizard Professor Augustinus Bader (who also has his own skincare line). And for the Daily Cleansing Protocol (€130) – the poshest double-cleanse in town – Beckham worked with aesthetician Melanie Grant. It’s a winning formula.

“The idea is that when you take your make-up off, your skin looks better.”

Alongside VB’s skincare, we’ll be browsing mascaras and eyeliners, lipsticks and bronzers, and the newest product, Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader The Concealer Pen (€75). “I could never find a formula that satisfied me, or a colour that perfectly suited my skin,” says Beckham. “I truly believe this is one of a kind – we haven’t compromised on either the science of the formula or the make-up aspect. I want to be the best in class – my dream is to have make-up that conceals and treats at the same time. So that when you take your make-up off, your skin looks better.” The brush pen format is “ideal for fast, one-handed application and touch-ups on the go, which is how I apply my make-up. While testing it, I’ve noticed a big difference in the skin under my eyes: even if I’m having a make-up-free day, I will still wear this to treat my skin.” Be aware the slimline pen contains only 2ml of product – most concealers contain around 5-6ml.

What else should we make a beeline for? “Our Satin Kajal Liners (€34) are our best-selling product for a reason – one is sold every 30 seconds globally!” Beckham tells me. “The creamy texture glides on and can be used for an eyeliner look, or buffed out for a smoky eye. Yet once it sets, it can stay put all day long. My favourite shade to wear is Cocoa, a rich chocolate brown I wear as an alternative to black.” My own favourites include core basics Future Lash Mascara (€37), with its superfine brush, and BabyBlade for brows (€37) for creating a full but natural-looking brow; Beckham says that if she has just five minutes to get ready, this is what she reaches for first. Bitten Lip Tints (€44) capture super-natural subtle lip shades that are softly flattering, at every age.

What are the key beauty tips you pass on to your daughter, I ask Beckham? “I’m not sure Harper needs my tips, she is so knowledgeable about beauty! But I think it would be to take care of your skin, very simple. For me, this starts with cleansing – I cleanse in the morning and double-cleanse at night using our Daily Cleansing Protocol, which consists of an Oil Cleanser to remove make-up, pollution and dirt, and a Lactic Acid Gel Cleanser to gently exfoliate.”

The biggest challenge so far? “That I want to launch everything now! I am just scratching the surface of the products we want to launch and I am impatient and excited for some of the innovations we have in store for 2025. However, we are taking our time, in such a crowded category like beauty, to deliver the best we can in every way.”

Victoria Beckham Beauty opens at Brown Thomas Grafton Street, Dublin 2, on September 12.
