Twenty years later, these classic but cool Kate Moss looks are heavy on appeal …
According to Ellie Bamber, the actress who plays Kate Moss in new biopic Moss & Freud (read our interview with Bamber here), the zenith of Moss’ style is, actually, her casual looks. “Some of my favourite Kate outfits are based on what she wore to the airport,” she says.
This, of course, peaked in the 2000s when Moss’ street style was so hotly-documented in print media we could have written a thesis on it. A case in point is Moss, pictured in New York in 2006, wearing a simple grey jumper and flared Chloé jeans. “It’s literally a crew neck jumper and heels and it’s just so good. I mean, all of her off duty style is so cool,” Bamber says.
Indeed, if we had to land on a specialist appreciation category for the supermodel, it would likely be Kate Moss On The School Run, when poppy-print mini dresses were teamed with ballet flats and pretty cotton-poplin styles were given edge with classic wayfarer sunglasses. The common thread in all of these outfits? Nothing looks out of place today. Indeed, trending summer brands like Posse, Reformation, Dôen and Sézane all rotate similar floral mini dresses within their current collections.
Then, of course, there’s denim. Moss has always infused jeans with a bohemian edge, whether it’s through her now-iconic Vivienne Westwood Pirate boots – a staple of noughties fashion and also loved by Sienna Miller – or the addition of a slim scarf and a (currently trending) Napoleon jacket.
On the topic of jeans, we’re taking this as a reminder that of-the-moment leather thong sandals look just as good with demi-flared jeans as they do the straight-leg styles which dominate now.
Some great things – like a quilted black handbag – never age, as demonstrated by this 2005 shot of Moss touting a Marc Jacobs Blake bag replete with chunky gold chain strap. Of course, Kate’s designer bag repertoire includes classics like Mulberry’s Roxanne bag and Balenciaga’s City bag, both of which have verve today.
A testament to how enduring the polka dot print is – seen on the SS26 runways at brands like Nina Ricci, MSGM and Dries Van Noten – Kate’s spaghetti strap dress chimes perfectly with 2026’s occasion dressing mood.
