How Far Would You Travel For A Facial?

The facialists and treatments worth a trip …

When it comes to spa treatments, I’ll always opt for a facial over a massage unless my shoulders are completely concrete. This is a throwback to a teenage acne problem which has not only left me with physical scars but emotional ones too. I still believe I have “bad” skin, ergo I will go to great lengths and distances to make it better. Designer Diane von Furstenberg, she of high cheekbones and radiant skin, has also influenced me. When I interviewed her many years ago she told me her skincare routine revolved around the weekly treat of a facial with New York-based super facialist Tracie Martyn “Her facials defy gravity – she keeps my face up,” she said. If or when I win the lottery, I will follow Diane’s lead. However, given the excellent therapists in Ireland, there’s no need to go quite so far.

In Dublin, I rely on Agnes Gajewska’s bespoke facials, which complement her excellent (online) Face Yoga workshops. Such is Agnes’ prowess and popularity, she nearly always has an extensive waiting list at Essentials Clinic in Dublin 4 and at Planet Beauty by Brown Thomas in Dublin 2 where her Sculpt Pro Face treatments include the application of Medik8, Skinrocks and Sunday Riley products, with her highly effective buccal and gua sha massage techniques. @agnesgajewska

I’ve also been a regular client of Elaine Butler Doolin, owner of Bespoke Beauty in Donnybrook, Dublin 4. Elaine created her new Cloud9 Hydra Cell Facial, €135, especially for those going through hormonal changes and the menopause. Silky Simone Mahler products, infra red light, cryotherapy, extraction and thorough massage are all part of this facial, which, as the name suggests, is supremely relaxing and also promotes collagen production. @bespokebeautydublin

For an holistic treatment that marries science, nature and self care, try the Ground Biome Facial at The Spa at The Shelbourne, from €140. Peigin Crowley created this facial especially for the hotel, which incorporates lymphatic drainage and cooling therapy alongside probiotic-rich plant nutrition to supercharge the skin’s microbiome. Afterwards, enjoy a glass of champagne in the relaxation area overlooking St Stephen’s Green before heading home feeling totally at one in mind, body and spirit – with radiant skin! @theshelbournedublin

Johnstown Estate, Co Meath

Several of my friends rave about the thermal facilities at the Johnstown Estate, which is currently offering an Age-Defying Luxe Retreat, from €557 for two. This includes breakfast, dinner and access to the spa in addition to a high-performance retinal facial from Medik8. @the.johnstown.estate

Glenlo Abbey, Co Galway

I tried a Seabody facial during a recent stay at Glenlo Abbey. This incorporated founder Dr Helena McMahon’s clinically proven marine bioactives. I’m a convert, and especially love the Overnight Elixir Serum. You can also book Seabody facials at Carton House, Co Kildare – a refined ritual using sculpting massage, fascia release and lymphatic techniques to deliver visibly lifted, brighter, rebalanced skin. From €135. @glenlo_abbey

Ashford Castle, Co Mayo

A morning walk on the grounds with the hotel’s resident wolfhounds, a boat ride around Lough Corrib and a private wine tasting experience in the historic cellars: these are some of my memories from a visit to Ashford Castle earlier this year. It’s definitely a bucket list destination where every sense is activated, none more so than in its serene spa, which regularly appears on international Best Spa lists. I found it regal and relaxing, not always a given in such rarefied surroundings. I particularly liked the Moorish décor and stunning mosaic installation by South African ceramic artist Jane du Rand that adorns the pool area.

Guests can book treatments using Natura Bissé, Voya and B Africa products, in addition to Augustinus Bader – an exclusive collaboration with the Castle. If you’re new to this brand, as I was, this facial is a great introduction to the skincare range and massage techniques, referred to reverentially as “The Method” by experts. Skin needs are addressed on a deeper level with special TFC8 technology products powered by a blend of amino acids, high-grade vitamins and peptides. Post-facial, I felt refreshed and toned, with a firmer jawline, so I immediately invested in the Discovery Duo of The Cream and The Rich Cream for day and night. Yes, they’re pricey, as is treatment at €250, but the hype is merited. To offset the cost, there’s a tempting two-night Augustinus Bader Spa Experience including all manner of treats such as Augustine’s Bader Body Ritual, dinner in George V restaurant and complimentary outdoorsy activities. There’s no need to bring extra gear as the hotel lends guests Barbours and wellies too! @ashfordcastle

Kelly’s Resort & Spa, Co Wexford

It doesn’t take much to lure me to Rosslare, where I recommend sunrise and sunset strolls on its gorgeous strand. I’ve been back on several occasions, especially for a facial at Kelly’s Sea Spa with head therapist Fidelma. In addition to offering ESPA treatments, it’s the only spa in Ireland where you’ll find Caudalie’s cutting-edge vinotherapy treatments, using grape seeds (called polyphenols). This collaboration is a natural fit given the hotel’s superior cellar (there are over 60,000 bottles) and Managing Director Bill Kelly’s passion for wine. Caudalie comprises a complete range to suit every type of skin, from Vinosource and Premier Cru to Beauty Elixir, which is always in my bag.

On my last visit, I tried the Premier Cru Facial, €110, that combines facial massage with Premier Cru Serum and Cream, which is particularly good for reducing fine lines and skin spots. The latter has been described as a natural filler and comes with a nod from Harvard Medical School, no less. I certainly saw a difference to the texture and tone of my skin. One tip I picked up is to half and freeze grapes, then rub them on your face for an instant boost in the morning or evening. It’s a great way to get a concentrated boost of natural goodness. One day, I hope to visit Les Sources de Caudalie in Bordeaux where the original Vinotherapie Spa overlooks the vineyards. Until then, I’ll keep returning to Kelly’s where the combination of sea air, super food and results-driven treatments are worth the journey. @kellysresort

Hillsborough, Co Down

As a resident, I’m slightly biased, but there are many reasons to visit Hillsborough, including Skin Future, owned by facialist and nutritionist Aine Lavery. Aine is not about quick fixes and has grown a legion of fans, especially those with eczema and acne. She’s her own best advert as her skin seems lit from within, and regularly works with brides to ensure glowing skin for their wedding day.

This year, Skin Future became the first salon in Northern Ireland to offer Biologique Recherche treatments – quite a coup! If you haven’t tried BR facials, they follow a specific protocol for the face, neck and décolletage, beginning with a thorough cleanse before an “opening” massage designed to stimulate circulation and boost lymphatic drainage. Skin exfoliation follows with the iconic P50 lotion and a booster treatment, also designed to sculpt facial contours. A bespoke mask made up of a cocktail of active ingredients is applied before the finale of yet another massage using active marine biological ingredients, creams and finishing serums. I had this facial prior to a mini break and reaped the benefits long afterwards.

Should you wish to combine a treatment with an overnight stay, I recommend Arthur’s boutique hotel on Main Street, Kin + Folk or Keane’s Deli for lunch, and The Parson’s Nose for supper. @skinfutureNI

London, UK

If visiting London, super facialist and skincare expert Teresa Tarmey is offering a trio of different treatments in Claridge’s exquisite spa as part of a year-long residency. A must-book is her signature “TT” facial using Skin Master Plus, an instrument that removes the superficial layer of skin and regenerates the deeper layer, making the face more luminous from the first treatment. @claridgeshotel
