Bucket list destinations in one of the most beautiful places on earth …
In 1962, Jacqueline Kennedy holidayed in Ravello, staying in Palazzo Episcopio, the former residence of King Vittorio Emanuele III. She was often spotted driving an open top Fiat 600 Jolly along the winding coastal roads, water skiing at Conca dei Marini, clubbing in Positano, visiting the ruins in Paestum and shopping in Amalfi. The charismatic Fiat heir Gianni Agnelli was a constant companion, which sparked rumours they were having an affair. Her trip ignited universal interest in the Amalfi coast’s retro glamour and rustic beauty. However, it’s possible to enjoy the coast without having a First Lady budget.
Late spring and early autumn are my preferred times to visit – ideal for hiking trails such as the Path of the Gods or dining on sunlit terraces without the tourist throng. In high summer, beach clubs hum (Le Sirenuse Mare is the latest opening) and festivals energise pretty piazzas.
The region has many storied hotels: Villa Treville, the former home of director Franco Zeffrelli, is on my bucket list. @villatreville
Casa Angelina is a modernist marvel surrounded by lemon groves, with access to a beach club and motorboats for exploring secret coves. @casaangelinalifestyle
The bucolic Laqua Countryside, one of five boutique resorts owned by Michelin-starred chef Antonino Cannavacciuolo, is just outside the pell-mell of Sorrento. For solo travellers, TD Active’s Amalfi Coast Walking Holiday takes in picturesque villages on leisurely walks with plenty of free time.
Vietri sul Mare where the low-key Villa Maria Hotel is hard to beat for views and value. Happily, some of the places Jackie frequented remain unchanged. Worth a visit are La Tonnarella restaurant in Conca dei Marini and Salvatore Ravello.
