From culinary collaborations to fashion retrospectives, design anniversaries and upcoming auctions, it’s going to be a busy autumn …
“Always the Weird Girl” exhibition is a celebration of Joanne Hynes x Dunnes Stores, tracing ten years of Joanne’s artistic process and design, demonstrating her originality, craftsmanship and distinctive voice. The exhibition takes its name from one of her embellished T-shirts and the phrase sums up the spirit that has pervaded this highly successful collaboration. Presented in the The Atrium of Trinity College Dublin, from September 17 to 20, visitors can rediscover previous collections from “You do You” and “I beg your pardon” to “Fall hard for Love” which were inspired by historic figures such as Constance Markievicz, Lucia Joyce, Maude Gonne, and artists including Mainie Jellet and Alice Maher. There’s also a chance to see her new collection, “You Were Always Enough” which harks back to her first AW16 presentation, full of irreverent chains, utilitarian fabrics and details.
Founded 30 years ago by Helen Kilmartin, Minima has always been the go-to repository of contemporary design for architects, designers and private clients. Acting as the sole Irish partner for brands including B&B Italia, Maxalto, Cassina, Flexform, Edra, Glas Italia, Poltrona Frau, and Davide Groppi, a visit to one of Minima’s showrooms in Dublin’s Hanover Quay and its flagship space at One Ballsbridge, is akin to attending Milan Furniture Fair, minus the airmiles.
To commemorate this 30-year journey, Helen has collaborated with Turin-based photographer Barbara Corsico to photograph the people of Minima on or alongside their favourite iconic pieces. This exhibition will be held from September 18 to 20, in the Hanover Quay showroom, where some of Eileen Gray’s iconic pieces will be on view. These include her non-conformist chair and the 1926 Bibendum armchair.
Design lovers should also note an upcoming auction organised by DeVere’s on November 3, hosted at The RHA Gallery, Ely Place, Dublin 2. This will include Danish, Italian and French pieces from the 1960s and 70s including Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen, Niels Moller, Charles & Ray Eames, also modern design pieces by Roche Bobois, Knoll and B + B Italia. The catalogue will be available from mid-October, and will include artworks by Patrick Scott, Sir Terry Frost, Louis le Brocquy, Stephen McKenna, John Shinnors.
For sculpture fans, The Montenotte Cork has a new exhibition presented with The Kildare Gallery. “Mike Duhan: 50 Pieces of Bronze” features figurative, timeless works displayed throughout the hotel’s entrance and Victorian sunken gardens. As a master figurative artist, Mike Duhan uses the naked human figure as a powerful vehicle to explore what it means to be human.
The urban retreat’s executive chef Martin Lovell will also welcome Robbie Krawczyk of Restaurant Chestnut to Panorama restaurant on Sunday October 18 for The Hillside Gathering – a special four-hand dinner. With the twinkling lights of Cork City as the backdrop, the event is limited to just 40 guests, offering a rare invitation to experience Robbie Krawczyk’s culinary genius before his restaurant closes at the end of October.

This autumn, Ballyfin, Co Laois is hosting a distinguished programme of dining, wine and artistic experiences in addition to its daily activities programme which includes guided nature hikes, flower arranging every Friday and garden walks with the gardeners. For gourmets, a must book is an exclusive overnight stay and dining experience on Sunday November 8 when Ballyfin’s executive head chef Richard Picard-Edwards will be joined by chef Mickael Viljanen of Chapter One. This collaboration will result in a one-off menu which begins with a champagne reception in the Gold Drawing Room, followed by dinner in the State Dining Room and a nightcap in the Cellar Bar.
