What to expect when Dublin’s design community reunites this autumn…
Five days, 30 events, 35 speakers: following last year’s pivotal inaugural event, Design Week Dublin, in partnership with Range Rover, returns from September 16-20, bringing together leading Irish and international architects, interior designers and fashion designers for Design Talks, Design Round Tables and Fashion Conversations.
Design Week Dublin’s two anchor locations are Anantara The Marker Dublin and the historic Malt House, both in the Grand Canal area, with additional satellite events taking place in studios, showrooms and creative spaces around the city. The programme opens at the Malt House on September 16 with a Design Talk with guest of honour Jasper Conran. Jasper Conran – A Life in Design explores his career in fashion, interiors and hospitality, from his design-steeped upbringing to his stellar career in fashion, to his latest project – exquisite hotels in Morrocco.
This will be followed by Geri O’Toole – Soul Led, a visual journey through Geri Designs‘ creative upbringing and approach to luxury interiors. The day concludes with The World of Maria Grachvogel, in which the celebrated fashion designer discusses her uniquely architectural approach to fashion, the anniversary of her incredible Magic trousers, and her own chic and unique home.
Proceedings on September 17 continue with Sara Cosgrove – All About the Flow, exploring the joined-up thinking behind Sara’s residential interiors. At lunchtime, the Interior Design Round Table brings together Geri O’Toole, Susan McGowan, Maria Fenlon, Louise Rankin, Eilish Rickard and Grania Murray for a broader exchange of ideas. The afternoon’s Shopping for Vintage – An Eye for the Original looks at sourcing vintage and antique furniture, while the evening features Architect Diaspora – In Practice Overseas, with Irish architects Ronan Dunphy, John McElgunn and Julia Loughnane discussing their careers on the international stage.
On September 18, the programme moves to Anantara The Marker, beginning with Róisín Lafferty – Bold Moves, covering her new gallery, bespoke furniture and lighting collections and collaborations. Susan McGowan – In Perspective follows, with Susan McGowan of Ashen & Cloud, before Brian Woulfe – Timeless Interiors explores how thoughtful design can elevate everyday living.
The weekend has a strong fashion and architecture focus, starting on September 19 with Fashion Conversations featuring Róisín Linnane, Jennifer Slattery, Joanne Hynes, Colin Burke and Paula Rowan, followed by Níall McLaughlin – In Conversation, exploring the celebrated Irish architect’s projects and practice. The afternoon Interior Design Round Table brings together Sara Cosgrove, Brian Woulfe, Aiveen Daly, Róisín Lafferty, Maria MacVeigh and Helen Kilmartin, while Emma O’Neill – A World of Interiors offers a look inside the incredible Studio Sofield in New York, its fascinating portfolio and celebrity clients, including Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent.
On September 20, a second Fashion Conversation features Sharon Hoey of AndTate, Anna Guerin of The Landskein, New York-based shoe designer Eileen Shields, Lucy Downes of Sphere One and Christine Murphy of Urban Aran, followed by a Design Talk with everyone’s favourite garden designer. Diarmuid Gavin – Radical Greening will explore the power of redical planting in our urban landscape and our own gardens. The finale, O’Donnell + Tuomey – In Conversation, sees Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey discuss projects including V&A East and Sadler’s Wells, and the principles behind their work.
Events will last 90 minutes, from 9.30-11am, 12-1.30pm, 3-4.30pm or 5.30-7pm, with opportunities before and after to catch up with friends and network with other design-lovers over coffee or a cocktail. Keep an eye on the DWD26 programme for satellite events in showrooms and studios all over the city too – there are plenty of parties and panels to enjoy.
