The Best Of 2025: 100+ Binge-Worthy Series Of The Year

From crime dramas and thrillers to romance and comedy, put your feet up and dive into one of these series over the break …

NETFLIX

Victoria Beckham

Two years after Beckham‘s hugely popular documentary on Netflix, this three-part doc charts Victoria’s pursuit of credibility in the fashion industry, with appearances from Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Juergen Teller, Roland Mouret and friend Eva Longoria. While there are some revelations about David injecting millions to fund VB’s brand, and Victoria struggling with an eating disorder since childhood, the series has so far scored less than half the audience as it lacks the candid direction of Fisher Stevens, who was recommended for the project by his friend Leonardo DiCaprio.

There are plenty of other new celebrity documentaries to watch too, from Twiggy released on BBC iPlayer earlier this year and directed by Sadie Frost, to Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated The Eras Tour: The End of an Era six-part documentary on Disney+ in December chronicling her recordbreaking tour, following the launch of her smash hit The Life Of A Showgirl album.

With Love, Meghan

Meghan Markle returns to our screens with her new cooking, home and lifestyle series. Set in a rented property especially acquired for the project, this series sees Meghan inviting new and old friends to have candid conversations, while taking part in practical activities. The special guests featured in the eight-part series include her Suits co-star Abigail Spencer, Mindy Kaling and some acclaimed chefs, special friends and, of course, Prince Harry. Is Meghan Markle A Modern Day Domestic Goddess?

Famous Last Words

This riveting new documentary series features the final ever interview with modern history’s cultural icons on the message they want to leave with the world, with all episodes aired posthumously. Produced and hosted by Emmy Award winner Brad Falchuk (husband to Gwyneth Paltrow), a limited number of people know who participated before each episode is announced, with the host leaving the closed set at the end of the interview to allow the guest to close the episode with their final words to the audience.

The series begins with much-beloved conservationist Dr Jane Goodall filmed earlier this year, with the episode released days after her passing at age 91 earlier this month. Her final message was raw and emotional (we may have cried), with a warning about climate change and political interference, and how each of us needs to act now to make a difference. We won’t spoil the rest as this new idea is a must-watch.

Nobody Wants This

The unlikely couple of an agnostic podcaster and rabbi, expertly played by Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, won over audiences and critics alike in the first season – both were nominated for Golden Globes, SAG and Critics Choice Awards – but how long can their honeymoon phase last? New cast members include Leighton Meester (Brody’s wife IRL) and Seth Rogen, who’s become a star of the small screen thanks to his critically acclaimed show The Studio.

Sirens

Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Kevin Bacon and Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) star in this dark comedy mini-series. Set over the course of one explosive weekend, the series follows Fahy (who we love from The Perfect Couple and The White Lotus) in a Blink Twice setting – another good film recommendation from Zoe Kravitz and Channing Tatum, when they were still a couple. Filmed in a lavish estate, it’s described as a “sexy and darkly funny exploration of women, power and class.” It was one of the biggest hits of the year and the surreal fashion had us hooked, so catch up if you haven’t watched it already.

The Four Seasons

A Tina Fey creation with fellow 30 Rock writer-producers Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, Date Night co-stars Tina and Steve Carrell reunite on screen after fifteen years in this eight-episode series, with Will Forte and Colman Domingo adding even more comic relief. This adaptation of Alan Alda’s 1981 big-screen rom-com (who makes a cameo), starring Carol Burnett and Rita Moreno, the small-screen iteration follows the foursome’s decades-long relationships since college and how divorce can cause a schism in the group. Guaranteed to make you laugh or even cry, it may also inspire your next getaway as one of the highlights is that the characters are always on vacation – from New York to Puerto Rico.

Bad Thoughts

Comedian, writer, author, actor and podcaster, Tom Segura self-financed a pilot episode for this comedy series that was subsequently sold to Netflix, where he acts as executive producer, director and lead actor. That’s how you do it! Segura lets us into his intrusive thoughts in this new mini-series of standalone episodes, each a vignette on a topic of choice. For example, jobs. Think Black Mirror … but funny?

Emily In Paris

Emily is back again for season five, this time in Italy. Now the head of Agence Grateau Rome, Emily faces more professional and romantic challenges as she adapts to life in a new city. Just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires and the fallout cascades into career setbacks and personal heartbreak. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle until a secret threatens one of her closest relationships. As ever, Emily talks herself out of trouble and we expect nothing less. The usual cast returns with Lily Collins, Lucas Bravo, Ashley Park and Camile Razat, but with another new man in Emily’s life played by Eugenio Franceschini (Reckless). We’re here for the fashion, darling!

Running Point

Kate Hudson stars in this comedy series as a reformed party girl unexpectedly put in charge of her family’s pro basketball team. She must prove herself as a businesswoman and make her family proud. Created by Mindy Kaling (recently featured on Meghan Markle: With Love), there’s a strong cast including Justin Theroux, Max Greenfield, Chet Hanks and Brenda Song. It’s already been renewed for a second season, so you know it’s good.

Too Much

Love it or hate it, Lena Dunham’s semi-autobiographical romcom created with her partner Luis Felber is actually Too Much as it wasn’t renewed for a second series! Starring Megan Stalter (Hacks) as one to watch, the Girls writer created the show with her in mind, playing her sister. There are many awkward moments, intimate conversations and some laughs. The incredible cast is worth a watch alone, including Andrew Scott, Richard E Grant, Naomi Watts, Rita Wilson, Stephen Fry, Kit Harington, Jennifer Saunders, Emily Ratajkowski and Dean-Charles Chapman, with cameos by Jessica Alba, Rita Ora, Alix Earle, Jake Shane and Owen Thiele.

Black Mirror

Black Mirror finally returned for season seven and, unsurprisingly, the list of stars in each episode is remarkable, including Chris O’Dowd, Rashida Jones, Emma Corrin, Paul Giammetti and many more. The tech-noir commentary leaves us shaken after time season – especially with the rise in Gen Z online nightmares (Adolesence, anyone?) and the advancement in AI. Read more about each episode.

Adolesence

From the creators of Boiling Point (a one-take wonder), also starring Stephen Graham (A Thousand Blows), this four-part limited series captivated audiences. A family’s world turns upside down when their 13-year-old is arrested for murdering a schoolmate. The charges against their son force them to confront every parent’s worst nightmare. Inspired by the rise of incel culture, it’s a heartbreaking watch, but is also said to be one of the most important series of the year.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This mini-series is based on the true story of wellness guru Belle Gibson. Starring the captivating Kaitlyn Dever (Unbelievable, Booksmart, Beautiful Boy), Aisha Dee (Sissy) and Alycia Debnam-Carey (Into The Storm), this stranger-than-fiction story follows the life and rise of Gibson, who garnered a large social media following by pretending to have cancer. She promotes self-care therapies to keep the disease under control until a reporter sets out to unveil the truth of this con-woman’s schemes. The shocking reveal of lies and deceit just goes to show that we can’t always believe what we see online but, in desperate situations, it can feel like the only place to turn. One of our favourites this year.

The Beast In Me

This highly-anticipated psychological thriller mini series starring Claire Danes (Homeland) and Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason) is produced by actor and director Jodie Foster with late night host Conan O’Brien – an unlikely pairing. Danes plays a famous but failing author who’s become a recluse since the death of her young son due to a drunk driver. Luckily for her, she finds the perfect subject for a new book right next door when a rich, powerful new neighbour moves in … who might be a murderer. The star-studded cast includes Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul), Brittany Snow (The Hunting Wives) and Natalie Morales (Dead To Me).

Untamed

Eric Bana (Dirty John) leads as a special service agent who investigates the death of a woman at Yosemite National Park, but inevitably finds out more than he bargained for. Also starring Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), Rosemarie DeWitt (La La Land), Wilson Bethel (How To Get Away With Murder) and Lily Santiago (La Brea), the scenery alone is enough to take your breath away.

Zero Day

In this US political thriller mini-series, Robert De Niro stars as a former President who gets called back to duty when the country is under a devastating cyber attack that causes multiple disasters nationwide. As he begins investigations, he discovers only more conspiracies, which is a poignant tale for our time. The outstanding cast includes Angela Bassett (American Horror Story), Connie Britton (The White lotus), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror), Joan Allen Matthew (Game of Thrones), Matthew Modine (Oppenheimer, Stranger Things) and Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls).

Squid Game

The final season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller picks up after season two’s cliffhanger when Gi-Hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) is left devastated following his failed rebellion and the sudden death of his closest friend. This season is all about Gi-hun’s transformation and how he overcomes challenges. Albeit on an extreme and violent scale, the game raises the conversation around capitalism. Not to mention, rumours of a Squid Game US seem confirmed given Cate Blanchett’s cameo in the finale playing ddakji with a stranger, just like The Recruiter at the beginning of the series. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said this isn’t the end of the Squid Game universe, so we can’t wait to see Cate in action.

You

Penn Badley’s fifth and final season in this psychological thriller sees his end as a stalker who has no issue resorting to murder to keep his secret safe. Along with his wife, played by Charlotte Ritchie (Call the Midwife), the now-rich serial killer returns to New York, but the ghosts of his past come back to haunt him – as does his obsessiveness when he befriends a young woman, played by Medeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale). Time for his comeuppance finally!

House of Guinness

Raise a glass to House of Guinness, from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. In his eight-part drama series, the Oscar nominee trades Birmingham in England for 1860s Ireland, charting the famous family in 19th-century Dublin and New York. We see the consequences following the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the extraordinary success of the world-renowned brewery, and the fate of his four adult children. Siblings Arthur (Anthony Boyle), Edward (Louis Partridge), Anne (Emily Fairn) and Ben (Fionn O’Shea) experience exceptional highs and lows as they work to live up to their birthright of black gold.

Death By Lightning

Another Succession alum can be seen in this historical drama mini series, with Matthew Macfadyen in a more sinister role as Charles Guiteau, who assassinated America’s 20th President James Garfield, played by Micheal Shannon (Bullet Train). Also starring Bradley Whitford (Get Out, The Diplomat), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Shea Whigham (True Detective, The Wolf of Wall Street) and Northern Irish actress Paula Malcomson (Sons of Anarchy, The Hunger Games). The show pays tribute to Garfield for his anti-corruption and pro-civil rights stance in 1881, who was taken too soon only months into his tenure.

Black Rabbit

Also executive produced by both leading stars, Jude Law and Jason Bateman garnered polarising reviews on the believability of this duo. The story follows the owner of a restaurant hotspot who allows his problematic brother back in his life. Once he opens the door, however, he remembers why he closed it as his estranged sibling threatens to bring down everything the acclaimed restauranteur has built. Also starring John Ales (Euphoria, Sneaky Pete), Troy Kotsur (Coda) and Cleopatra Coleman (In The Shadow of The Moon).

Wednesday

Jenna Ortega, Hunter Doohan, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Steve Buscemi, Luis Guzmán and Joy Sunday are back for season two, with Joanna Lumley joining the cast. This season, Wednesday is focused on improving her psychic abilities, saving her friend’s life from a potential untimely end, and uncovering a murder mystery. Look out for Irish locations in Dublin’s Deansgrange Cemetery, Trinity College, Powerscourt Demesne in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow and Charleville Castle in Co Offaly, which is reputed to be haunted … perfect for the Addams family!

Missing You

Harlen Coben is at it again – Fool Me Once was one of the most watched series last year on Netflix, with Missing You getting the same reception. This mini-series follows a detective (played by Slow Horses’ star Kat Donovan), whose fiancé disappeared years ago. Now, she suddenly sees him on a dating app and her world explodes all over again. His reappearance forces her to dive back into the mystery surrounding her father’s murder and uncover long-buried secrets from her past.

The Madness

This thriller follows media pundit Muncie Daniels, played by Tony award winner Colman Domingo (Euphoria, Sing Sing, Selma) who stumbles on a murder in the Poconos and has to fight to prove his innocence. If you liked Presumed Innocent, you’ll love this. Also starring Gabrielle Graham (Twenties), Tamsin Topolski (What You Wish For), Marsha Stephanie Blake (Brother) and Deon Cole (Average Joe).

Dept Q

Slow Horses in Scotland? Gritty and witty, a detective leads a new police department, leading an unlikely team of misfits in an attempt to solve Edinburgh cold cases. From the writer and director of The Queen’s Gambit, the cast includes an unrecogsiable Matthew Goode (Abigail, The Imitation Game), Leah Byrne (Nightsleeper, Call The Midwife), Kelly MacDonald (Operation Mincemeat, Gosford Park), Mark Bonnar (Motherland), Alexej Manvelov (Chernobyl), Kate Dickie (The Day of the Jackal, Game of Thrones) and Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter, Bridget Jones Diary).

Hostage

This five-part political thriller stars Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Julie Delpy (Before Sunrise) as the fictional British prime minister and French president respectively. The PM’s husband is kidnapped while the visiting president is blackmailed, so chaos ensues. Forced into a fierce rivalry, they try to work together to uncover the plot that threatens them both, but can they really trust each other? Also starring Lucian Msamati (Conclave), Corey Mylchreest (My Oxford Year), Ashley Thomas (Them) and Martin McCann (The Survivalist).

Toxic Town

Jodie Wittaker and Aimee Lou Woods star in this harrowing four-part mini series, a true story of incredible women who stood up for themselves and their community. When dozens of babies in the UK’s East Midlands are born with disabilities as a result of toxic waste dumped in the vicinity, their mothers embark on a battle to hold those responsible to account. Also starring Claudia Jessie (Bridgerton).

The Åre Murder

True Detective meets The Missing. This Swedish five-part thriller tells the story of a detective under internal investigation who moves to her sister’s vacation home in Åre. She’s unwinding near a ski resort when a young girl’s disappearance draws her back to work. Her colleagues are suspicious of her, and everyone in the town are suspects to her. With a few more light-hearted moments, prepare to binge it.

The Breakthrough

Another Scandi crime drama, this true-crime thriller has earned its place in the noir genre, with The Guardian praising it as “the best Scandi noir in years”. When a double homicide goes unsolved for 16 years, a detective (Peter Eggers) teams up with a genealogist (Mattias Nordkvist) to catch the killer before it becomes a cold case. If you liked Under The Banner Of Heaven, you’ll appreciate this.

Cassandra

This gets a 100 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes; admittedly, from a small pool, but we trust that score more than Netflix’s trending recommendations! When a family moves into the oldest smart home in Germany decades after the original owner dies, it awakens the AI household helper Cassandra (Lavinia Wilson) who stops at nothing to keep them there. Another Black Mirror-esque romp.

Snow Girl

Season two of this Spanish drama set in Malaga – La Chica de Nieve, an adaptation of Javier Castillo’s novel The Soul Game – will have you looking for answers in all the twists and turns. Journalist Miren Rojo returns to solve another mystery, this time the murder of a teen girl and the disappearance of another. Spanish crime shows always take suspense up a notch, so this won’t disappoint.

Parisian Agency – Exclusive Properties

From Parisian townhouses and a five-star penthouse to a Château, the homes in season five are more extravagant than ever. As the Kretz family navigate work dynamics amid the competitive real estate market, they escort prospective buyers to bigger and more lavish homes than anything you’ve ever seen before. Think: a private island in Brittany and the former home of a king. It certainly hammers home the point that money doesn’t always buy taste …

Forever

Based on Judy Blume’s beloved 1975 novel, Mara Brok Akil adapts it to modern life, setting the series in Los Angeles as two young athletes become each other’s first love. The coming-of-age story stars newcomers Micheal Cooper Jr and Lovie Simone as they explore their identities in this sometimes-awkward, fast-moving journey of falling in love amid social and parental pressures. Regina King executive-produces and directs the first episode, so you know it’s got to be good.

Six Nations: Full Contact

The producers of Formula 1: Drive to Survive bring fans closer than ever to the 2024 Guinness Six Nations Championship. We follow the players into the exhilarating world of the oldest and greatest annual international rugby tournament, giving fans an insight into behind the scenes moments as the best teams in Europe battle it out in some of the biggest matches in the rugby calendar to take home the prestigious trophy. We get a glimpse into the home life of Peter O’Mahony and family, renowned for his gardening as well as rugby.

APPLE TV

Severance

Fans were waiting for almost three years for the latest season as director and executive producer Ben Stiller knew that it had to be as enthralling as the critically acclaimed first season. The leading foursome of Adam Scott, Britt lower, John Turturro and Zach Cherry command the screen, with Scott expertly acting as our eyes and ears as he navigates this dystopian world. Look out for Christopher Walken, Patricia Arquette, Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and Bob Balaban (Close Encounters of the Third Kind).

Pluribus

From the mastermind behind Breaking Bad, this nine-episode post-apocalyptic sci-fi series stars Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul, with a Truman Show style. The show follows a disillusioned author who is one of a handful of people in the world who’s immune to an alien virus that infects the entire population with a hive mind that’s unusually pleasant! The title refers to e pluribus unum, a Latin phrase meaning ‘out of many, one’ and is a unique take on the zombie genre. It received a rare 100 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so it comes highly recommended.

The Studio

Seth Rogen’s small screen comedy debut has already achieved critical acclaim for its direction, cinematography and satire of the film industry. Starring as a newly appointed head of a Hollywood production studio, hilarity ensues with fellow execs Catherine O’Hara, Bryan Cranston, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz and Chase Sui Wonders as things go from bad to worse at the struggling company. It has become notable for its extensive use of long takes (a true art as seen in Adolescence), as well as for featuring high-profile celebrity cameos in every episode such as Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Charlize Theron, Olivia Wilde, Sarah Polley, Greta Lee, Steve Buscemi, Dave Franco, Zac Efron, Johnny Knoxville, Josh Hutcherson and even Ice Cube!

The Morning Show

This award-winning drama, starring and executive produced by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, is in its fourth season. The new season sees returning heavyhitters Steve Carell, Jon Hamm and Emmy Award winner Billy Crudup (husband to Naomi Watts, who we loved in Too Much) with new, familiar faces including Academy Award winners Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons.

Down Cemetery Road

From the executive producers of Slow HorsesEmma Thompson plays a private investigator looking for a missing child. With the help of a concerned neighbour, played by Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Jane Eyre), they uncover secrets and a military conspiracy even emerges, causing chaos in Oxford’s suburbs. Also starring Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards award-winning actor Adam Godley (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Theory of Everything), Lizzy Caplan’s husband Tom Riley (The Nevers, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window) and Adeel Akhtar (Fool Me Once, Sherwood).

Chief of War

For fans of films like Pirates of The Caribbean style cinematography with the intensity of Gladiator – that seems like the perfect mix to us – then Chief of War starring the one and only Jason Momoa is the series for you. A dramatisation of the unification of the Hawaiian islands from an indigenous perspective, Momoa plays a war chief who tries to unite warring islands to save them from the threat of colonisation. This historical epic is one of the only fact-based representations of this period from the late eighteenth century, with the creators praised for their unique portrayal. The cast is predominantly Polynesian and was created by Momoa as a passion project to bring this untold story to a mainstream audience. From costumes to location, this is one to watch. Also starring Temuera Morrison (Moana) and Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent).

Murder Bot

In a hi-tech future, a rogue security robot (played by the darkly funny Alexander Skarsgård, who also produces) secretly gains free will. He calls himself Murderbot, while he would rather binge watch soap operas. Based on Martha Wells’ bestselling novels The Murderbot Diaries, this action comedy will scratch your sci-fi itch and make you laugh to boot. Also starring Noma Dumezweni (The Watcher) and Tattiawna Jones (Orphan Black).

The Last Frontier

Australian actor Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer, The Devil All the Time) leads this new series as a US Marshal who must protect his town in the outskirts of Alaska while he investigates a plane crash that set free multiple fugitives, now on the loose. Also starring Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia), Haley Bennett (Hillbilly Elegy) and Simone Kessell (Yellowjackets). If you liked Hijack with Idris Elba or Chief of War with Jason Momoa, you’re bound to love this.

Trespasses

This heartbreaking drama set in 1970s Northern Ireland is based on the 2022 debut novel by Louise Kennedy, who leading actress and executive producer Gillian Anderson (Sex Education, The Fall, The Crown) can’t praise enough. When young Catholic teacher Cushla falls for a married Protestant man, their secret affair ignites a dangerous love that defies the Troubles divide. Say Nothing star Lola Pettigrew glows with Anderson as mother and daughter in this four-part limited series, which also stars Gerard McCarthy from The Fall, Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey), Martin McCann (Hostage), Forrest Bothwell (The Gentlemen), and Lisa Dwyer Hogg and Paul Mallon, both from The Wise Guy.

Slow Horses

This beloved British spy thriller is based on Mick Herron’s novels Slow HorsesDead LionsReal Tigers, Spook Street, London Rules and Joe Country. It’s been renewed for a sixth and seventh series based on Slough House and Bad Actors. A dysfunctional team of MI5 agents and their obnoxious boss, the notorious Jackson Lamb superbly played by Gary Oldman, navigate the espionage world’s smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces. A stellar cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas, new dad Jack Lowden (Pride and Prejudice), Saskia Reeves (The Outrun) and more. The latest season returns with a bang when London is in the midst of a mayoral election … cue chaos.

Dope Thief

With a heavyweight cast, this show will have you on the edge of your seat. The story follows lifelong friends who rob a house, only to have their small-time grift become a life-and-death enterprise as they stumble upon a hidden narcotics corridor on the Eastern Seaboard. If you liked Narcos or Ozark, this is for you.

The Savant

This limited series starring and executive produced by Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain is inspired by a true-life story entitled “Is It Possible To Stop A Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” which featured in Cosmopolitan in 2019 by a woman known as “the Savant” who infiltrates online hate groups to try to prevent domestic public attacks. Also starring Nnamdi Asomugha (The Good Nurse), Jordana Spiro (Ozark) and guest star Pablo Schreiber (Den of Thieves, Halo). A heavy hitter that’s more timely than ever given the state of the world.

Prime Target

Leo Woodall plays a brilliant post-graduate mathematics student on the cusp of a major breakthrough when he discovers efforts are being made to destroy his work. From student to sleuth to spy, we’re just happy to see him back on our screens after captivating us on The White Lotus (more on that to follow). Also starring David Morrissey, Stephen Rea, Jason Flemyng and other familiar faces.

Smoke

Let’s hear it for Taron Egerton! The series follows the story of a troubled detective and an enigmatic investigator who are hot on the heels of two serial arsonists wreaking havoc in their town. Also starring Jurnee Smollett (The Order), Rafe Spall (The Big Short), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Dexter: Resurrection), Greg Kinnear (You’ve Got Mail), John Leguizamo (The Menu), Adina Porter (American Horror Story) and Anna Chlumsky (Inventing Anna).

Your Friends and Neighbours

Jon Hamm (who we know and love from Mad Men, The Morning Show and Bridesmaids), Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn bounce off each other as – you guessed it – friends and neighbours in this crime dramedy set in a New York suburb. The story follows a hedgefund manager (Hamm) who’s fired in disgrace, so he resorts to stealing from his wealthy neighbours’ homes … only to discover secrets that may be even more sinister than his. Hailed as radically different to anything we’ve seen before, you won’t want to miss it.

Stick

Owen Wison plays an ex-golfer who was once destined for greatness, but was fired and his wife has left him. All hope may not be lost, however, as he grabs the opportunity to coach a troubled teen prodigy. Also starring Marc Maron (The Order), Judy Greer (13 Going on 30), Timothy Olyphant (Santa Clarita Diet) and Peter Dager (Insidious: The Red Door), let this series be the feel-good show you need for year’s end.

Overcompensating

This light-hearted coming-of-age story follows an American football player – brilliantly played by Benito Skinner, aka Benny Drama – who overcompensates as he struggles to accept his sexuality in college. The stellar cast includes Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Adam DiMarco (The White Lotus), Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body), Kyle MacLachlan (Sex and The City), Lukas Gage (You), Kaia Gerber (Babylon), Wally Baram (One All The Way), Mary Beth Barone (Sugar Baby), Corteon Moore (Abraham’s Boys), Nell Verlaque (Big Shot) and Owen Thiele (Adults). If you like Hacks, you’ll love this.

Platonic

We’re happy to see Seth Rogen back on our screens after his hit show, The Studio, as he reunites with our another of our favourites, Rose Byrne. They originally starred together in the raucous film Neighbours (not to be confused with the infinitely running Australian TV series), the 2014 movie where they played husband and wife, while in this series they play estranged best friends who rekindle their friendship in midlife. Of course, there was the usual “will they, won’t they?” undertones in the first season as many viewers want to see them couple up, but writer and director Nicholas Stoller (who, incidentally, wrote and directed Neighbours) said not to expect a romantic storyline as they insist the show will stay true to its name. Only time will tell …

Love You To Death

Another Spanish hit, this romcom drama follows Raúl (Joan Amargós), who was recently diagnosed with cancer and whose world is unravelling. He meets former schoolmate Marta (Verónica Echegui) at a funeral – an interesting meet-cute – who has just discovered she is pregnant. They resume their friendship and decide to navigate life together. This will pull at your heartstrings too.

Mythic Quest

From the writers of It’s Only Sunny In Philadelphia, Charlie Day, Megan Ganz and Rob McElhenney are back for the fourth season of this wacky comedy about a video game company’s hit AI game. Emmy nominated, we don’t know why this series hasn’t received more hype, but that’s the beauty of Apple TV’s hidden gems.

Mr Scorsese

This five-part documentary series examines how award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s colourful life experiences informed his artistic vision, as each film he has made over the last five decades managed to stun the world with originality. With exclusive, unrestricted access to private archives, the series features never-before-seen interviews with the man himself, his family (including daughter Francesca, who’s become famous in her own right for making her dad a star on TikTok!), friends and creative collaborators including Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Cate Blanchett and Margot Robbie.

Acclaimed director Rebecca Miller explores the themes that inform his work, including the place of good and evil in the fundamental nature of humankind. We see his dedication to the craft and the extreme lengths he went to in order to get controversial films made. With a 98 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this is a unique portrait of a visionary who redefined cinema, now on the small screen.

Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost

Directed by their son Ben Stiller, this docu-film profiles his parents’ the marriage and careers as comedic partners, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, who were married for over 60 years until Anne’s death in 2015. The comedy duo proved very popular on variety shows like The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960s, followed by sketch shows in the ’70s and their own sitcom, The Stiller and Meara Show, in the ’80s. Jerry saw a late-career resurgence in the ’90s in SeinfeldThe King of Queens and Ben’s zany Zoolander films.

Ben followed in his parents’ footsteps and won a Primetime Emmy Award for his variety sketch series, The Ben Stiller Show, on MTV. He made his directorial debut in Reality Bites with Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke, and went on to direct and star in films such as There’s Something About Mary, Along Came Polly, and franchises Meet the Parents, Madagascar and Night at the Museum. His most recent work on critically acclaimed Apple TV series Severance earned many Emmy wins, making him on of the most respected directors of our generation.

His two kids with wife of 25 years Christine Taylor (with a short separation before the pandemic) are also actors. Daughter Ella played Steve and Miranda’s son Brady’s pregnant “girlfriend” in HBO’s And Just Like That (IYKYK), while OG Sex and the City fans will recall that her grandmother Anne played Steve’s mother – a full circle moment! Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost explores the generational lessons we can all learn from our family. Another one to watch.

PRIME VIDEO

The Better Sister

Starring Jessica Biel (The Sinner) and Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) as very convincing estranged sisters who run in very different society circles, they’re forced back together after one of their husbands (expertly played by Corey Stoll from House of Cards with Robin Wright) is murdered, which exposes long-buried secrets. The detective in charge is played by the ever-thrilling Kim Dickens, formally a dectective in Gone Girl with the equally believable Rosamund Pike.

Task

Set in the working class suburbs of Philadelphia, Mark Ruffalo plays an FBI agent put in charge of a taskforce to end a string of violent robberies led by an unassuming family man. He’s won awards for acting like a cool sleuth in films – as in Zodiac and Spotlight – so we’re in good hands with Ruffalo on the small screen. Also starring Alison Oliver (Saltburn), Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope), Fabien Frankel (House of Dragon) and Tom Pelphrey (A Man In Full), it’s already been renewed for a second season.

The Girlfriend

Brilliantly directed by and starring Robin Wright (House of Cards), this hit six-episode limited series follows a dual-perspective between an overly protective mother and her son’s street smart new girlfriend, played by Olivia Cooke (Game of Thrones). The psychological thriller explores themes of love, greed and power, plus fabulous London interiors and a villa in Spain to die for …

Malice

Fans of The Talented Mr Ripley or Ripley with our own Andrew Scott will love this stylish, psychological thriller set in London and Greece, starring funnyman Jack Whitehall (Bad Eduction) as a charismatic tutor who charms his way into a wealthy family by posing as a nanny, or manny. David Duchovny (The X Files) plays the brash patriarch, who’s easily manipulated as a vengeful plot unfolds. Also starring Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones) and Raza Jaffrey (Refuge), pack your bags for an edge-of-your-seat watch.

Clean Slate

An Alabama dad (George Wallace) is shocked when his estranged son returns home after 23 years, now a proud trans woman, played by Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black). Embarking on their new relationship, the two stars have an undeniable chemistry and lots of laughs, which is to be expeccted as it was co-created by Cox and Wallace, and produced by Norman Lear, creator of hit 1970’s sitcom, The Jeffersons.

John Candy: I Like Me

Beloved for his iconic roles in Uncle Buck, Home AloneSpaceballs, The Great OutdoorsCool Runnings and more, the documentary is commendable for its sensitivity and honesty in telling the actor’s story and the troubles he had throughout his life. The film relies primarily on rare and never-before-seen archive footage, outtakes, private home video and audio commentary. For the film, Wicked‘s Cynthia Erivo recorded a cover of the song “Everytime You Go Away” that ended the classic 1987 film Planes, Trains and Automobiles. We hightly recommend it if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing it yet.

The White Lotus

Another season of Mike White’s slick, stylish, satirical series is over once again … and we’re still reeling. It was a slow burner, but that’s the point as the creator said on The White Lotus official podcast, “There was complaining about how there’s no plot, and that part I find weird because it never had a plot. Part of me is just like, bro, this is the vibe. I’m world-building.”

The Last Of Us

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey return in this Emmy-winning dystopian thriller about a post-apocalyptic world that terrified us all in the first season. Staying true to the video game that the show’s based on, the HBO original is one of the most expensive series in history and was one of the most watched debut seasons. Critics claim that it’s the best adaptation of a video game to date, with a third season expected to air in 2027.

Atomic

Starring Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), Shazad Latif (What’s Love Got To Do With It) and Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange is the New Black), this action-adventure is inspired by the non-fiction book, Atomic Bazaar by Vanity Fair journalist William Langewiesche. The Death of Bunny Munro

Based on the 2009 novel by singer and executive producer Nick Cave (his second after And the Ass Saw the Angel in 1989), this British dark comedy miniseries tells the story of a father who takes his young son on the road after his wife’s death. Small Town, Big Story

The affable Chris O’Dowd we all loved in Bridesmaids and Moone Boy has done it again, this time in a six-part comedy series set in Northern Ireland. With a fantastic cast including Kristina Hendricks (Mad Men), Eileen Walsh (Say Nothing, Small Things Like These) and Paddy Considine (House of The Dragon), it follows a Hollywood producer who returns home with a major film production in tow to shine a spotlight on a hidden secret: the town has a long history of attracting interstellar visitors, a phenomenon she has witnessed and kept quiet about for a quarter of a century! O’Dowd stars as the author of the book that this Hollywood production is based on, while he actually wrote the series during lockdown, recalling the quirks of many Irish towns, including his hometown, Boyle in Co Roscommon. O’Dowd and Hendricks also serve as executive producers.

The Chair Company

The third collaboration between creators Tom Robinson and Zach Kanin, who met on Saturday Night Live – the longest running sketch show in American history – this eight-episode comedy thriller has received critical acclaim, with some calling it one of the best shows of the year, while others note that its humour may not appeal to all audiences. Its blend of cringe comedy is similar to The Office and is HBO’s biggest comedy debut in over five years. Also starring Sophie Lillis (All Her Fault, It) and Lake Bell (Man Up), if you’re looking for something light and silly with a twist, this should tick all of the boxes.

The Paper

A follow-up and spinoff to cult mockumentary series The Office – which started in the UK with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (who serve as executive producers on all series), with the US version starring Steve Carrell running from 2005 to 2013 – this iteration from executive producer Greg Daniels stars our own Domhnall Gleeson with Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus). The same documentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, Pennsylvania branch twenty years earlier now focuses on a historic newspaper trying to stay in business, with Oscar the accountant the only returning character. It was renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere, which is destined to be great.

Matlock

For fans of legal dramas, this new spin on the original Matlock TV series that starred American favourite Andy Griffith sees a role reversal with “Matty” played by the always amazing Kathy Bates. She uses her unassuming demeanour and negotiation skills to win major cases and expose corruption as she rejoins the workforce at a prestigious law firm. The finale with a twist means that it’s already been renewed for a second season.

Annaleigh Ashford – well known for her Broadway musicals, including Wicked, Legally Blonde and Hair plays Melissa in this dark tale that’s stranger than fiction.
