Nobody Wants This: The LA-Cool Fashion Brands Stealing The Show In Netflix’s New Rom-Com

Like everyone, we’re obsessed with new Netflix show, Nobody Wants This. And, while we’re in love with the modern rom-com storyline, our interest was also piqued by the fashion …

Apart from swooning over Adam Brody in the new ten-part Netflix rom-com Nobody Wants This, there’s the sartorial eye candy too. Kristen Bell’s character has an on-point wardrobe that embodies a particular California cool-girl look. In fact, watching the show often feels like a game of ‘spot the viral product’ or on-trend Instagram brand. Throughout the show, Bell wears off-duty staples, such as trainers and wide-leg jeans, with as much ease as she does bomber jackets, slip skirts and tailored separates.

There are white dresses and skirts by Los Angeles brand Reformation, a noted appearance from a tan cut-out top by Christopher Esber, a pair of Adidas Samba trainers – there’s even a cameo from a leather cross-body bag by favourite French label Sézane. Perhaps what made it most striking was that it was nice to see clothes that are, in fact, quite true to life: these are brands and designers we are familiar with – the kind of pieces you could easily imagine spotting on an in-the-know LA (and beyond) type.

Read how to get the look below …

The Slip Skirt

In the very first episode, Bell wears a silk slip skirt paired with a tactile cropped knit, both in a zinging shade of lipstick red. Bell’s skirt is by Reformation; it’s a sold-out shade called Poinsettia, but it’s still available in other shades such as classic black, pictured below, cream and a polka-dot print. We love it teamed with an ultra-soft button-up cardigan for autumn.

The By Far Micro-Tote

When it comes to accessories, the 1990s influence is obvious, with Bell wearing a number of micro totes and shoulder bags, in baguette and crescent shapes. The brand in question? The buzzy Bulgarian bag brand By Far. Indeed, Bell wears the Bar Tote, Mini Soho and Baby Amber bag all by the label throughout the series. The Bar tote, below, crafted from glossy black Italian lambskin, is especially covetable.

The Pinstripe Two-Piece

Fun fact: the pinstriped waistcoat and tailored trousers worn to perfection by Bell in Nobody Wants This are made by Los Angeles brand Favourite Daughter; founded by sisters Sarah and Erin Foster, who created the show. The two-piece also comes with a matching double-breasted coat, which is top of our wish-list.

The Sailor Trousers

The ultra-slouchy olive trousers seen on screen have, in fact, a cult following of their own. They are the sailor pants by Jesse Kamm, the woman whose trousers are so popular they spurred a ‘Kamm pants’ phenomenon. What sets the show apart is the perfect tailoring: key pieces, from barrel shape jeans to suiting, fit Bell to perfection. Costume designer of the show Negar Ali Kline has detailed how a lot of the fashion on the show was custom-fitted to fit Bell’s petite frame – a friendly reminder to befriend your local tailor!
