Inspired By Taylor Swift’s Red? Here Are Six Brilliant Red Lipsticks That Suit Everyone

Apparently online searches for “Taylor Swift’s red lipstick” soared by 3,330 per cent when her album Red was released last Friday, according to the team at Irish-owned beauty website Millies.ie. Just like her viral Aran jumper moment, when she shifted many tonnes of knitwear purely by wearing a woolly sweater, Swift is inspiring people to reach for their own red lip colours.

Undoubtedly, Swift wears red well. But she’s not the only one, and let’s face it, when you’re 30 and fresh-faced, you can carry off most things. But age is certainly no barrier to a great red. I’ve been entranced by the practically neon lip colours worn by Prue Leith – fabulous at over 80 – on the all-bright and shiny, happy Bake Off.

And vibrant primary colours look to be a strong choice heading into next year in fashion and interiors as well as beauty: one of the Pantone key colours for 2022, along with bright primaries, is a glorious geranium red, Poinciana. Punchy orange-reds have long been a great way to make an instant statement: Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl and MAC Ruby Woo being two classics.

“For those with fair skin tones, pink-hued reds and coral shades will work best as they won’t overpower your overall look,” says Millies MD Joann Mahon. “Beige skin tones best suit true reds and berry shades, as they will instantly whiten teeth and highlight golden undertones. If your complexion is more medium, play around with browner shades of red as these will complement your skin tone, and will add a pop of colour to your look. Finally, for those with more melatonin in their skin, and darker complexions, you should look for intense colours, such as brick red and berry tones, or reds with blue undertones. If struggling to find the perfect shade for your skin tone, try one that has equal amounts of blue and orange. These types of lipsticks are more likely to suit every skin tone, due to the fact that they don’t wash out any of the undertones in your skin.”

There are no red lipsticks for sale on the official Taylor Swift store – we looked (instead there’s a range of €76 hoodies and €12 tissues …). Though surely her own take is on the horizon; it’s not like Swift to miss a trick. Console yourself with another popstar beauty line: Harry Styles has just dropped his own nail collection (and more) at www.Pleasing.com, where you’ll find a collection of four polishes for €59. And, inspired by Swift, here’s our pick of six of the most joy-giving, drop-dead reds to wear now …
