A Long Weekend Round-Up Of The Best New Cafés In Dublin And Wicklow

Dublin and Wicklow have no shortage of great coffee shops. Take yourself on a coffee tour this weekend to our favourite spots …

CINNAMOOD, O’Connell Street

Couple Anna and Luca started CINNAMOOD in the spring of 2022 in Germany, and it has already grown to 48 locations in 8 countries. This is its first foray into Ireland (and probably won’t be its last) where visitors are in for a treat with Next-Level Rolls – ranging from Dubai chocolate, pistachio, carrot cake, red velvet, crunchy pecan and maple glazed – washed down with specialty coffee, high-quality matcha and smoothies to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Twist Bakery, Temple Bar

Artisan baker Laura Munroe and pastry chef Marija Lacic have brought their combined experience to Twist. This all-vegan bakery and café specialises in handcrafted cakes and catering. Enjoy sweet and savoury croissants or loaf cakes with icing in an array of flavours including pistachio, vanilla chocolate marble, carrot and lemon meringue. Matcha lovers will get their fix here too.

Volumes, Georges Quay

Founded by The Dublin Coffee Guide creator Paddy Kirk @dubstreetcafe, this Scandi-style café, design and event space at George’s Quay is inspired by Copenhagen‘s famous coffee shops. Right next to Tara Station, it was an instant hit with its bagels, sandwiches, speciality coffee and sweet treats – try the sesame and white chocolate cookie.

Tír Deli, Custom House Quay

This popular deli now lives on Hatch Street Upper and Custom House Quay in the Docklands, perfect for visitors to EPIC Museum that sits in the vaults of the beautifully restored CHQ building. Other cafés include an obligatory Starbucks and The Bakehouse, which offers a free mini muffin with every hot drink.

Tábla, Mount Merrion

Founded by friends well-acquainted with the Dublin food scene, Tábla is led by Tanguy and chef Thomas, who both worked in Piglet Wine Bar before Tanguy opened popular restaurant allta. In their cosy bistro, find French classics like Cordon Bleu and Jambon Buerre, using local Irish ingredients. Lunch is available from Wednesday to Saturday, with intimate weekend dinner services, rounding out the week with their signature Sunday roast. They really do it all.

Luna Coffee, Mount Merrion

Named after founder Aimee’s niece, Luna’s new café in Mount Merrion joins her first in Sallynoggin, which turned four last November. Luna continues to support local producers with Roasted Brown coffee, cold-pressed juices from Green Beards in Ranelagh and Donnybrook, and trending strawberry matcha. All washed down with house-baked treats including triple chocolate, walnut and sea salt cookies; maple, pecan, cinnamon and pistachio buns; peanut butter and hazelnut bites, plus an array of sandwiches from goat’s cheese to Reubens.

Sister, Lennox Street

Another female-founded café, Sister is run by sisters Róisín – who’s also founder of much-loved vegan restaurant Saucy Cow in Temple Bar – and Aislinn Lawlor. Based on Lennox Street in Portobello, Dublin 8, expect plant-focused menus with speciality coffee and matcha, such as miso brown sugar shaken espresso and coconut mango iced matcha. The reviews are glowing after only a week, so we expect this is only the beginning for this dynamic duo.

Around The Corner, Portobello

Beloved brunch spot Alma, named after Argentinean owners Alejandro and Lucrecia’s kids – Anabella, Luciana, Macarena and Agustina – has moved to a larger venue on Curzon Street, with little sister Around The Corner on South Circular Road continuing its legacy by serving seasonal and local Irish produce packed full of Argentinian flavours. The new café will serve sandwiches and toasties, pastries from The Rock Bakery, coffee from Two Fifty Square, Fierce Mild beer, SIP organic wine and more to come.

Scéal Bakery, South Circular Road

Founders Charlotte and Shane have had a busy start to the year with two new location announcements. The first, a new bakery at Wilton Park in Dublin 2, opening onto the park’s restored Victorian fountain. In a heartfelt letter to customers, they thanked Dublin 8 for giving them their start and announced another Scéal Bakery on South Circular Road, in place of Little Bird Café which is now focusing on their yoga studio on the top floor.

The Day Café, Rialto

Formerly popular Daddy’s Café, the team at The Circular in Rialto created The Day Café to carry on the legacy. The signature Daddy’s chicken and grape sandwich is still on the menu, with the addition of treats from The Black Pitt Bakery. With outdoor seating to boot, it’s the perfect place for some casual grub.

Flat Coffee, Walkinstown

With its first location in Aylesbury Shopping Centre in Oldbawn, Flat Coffee has opened in Walkinstown too. Brunch options are something to behold with French toast, smashed avocado toast, Turkish or Romesco eggs, plus fresh sausage rolls, buns and more. It also serves our favourite OMMA matcha, so it’s worth a visit.

Baked and Bottled, Ashtown

This new neighbourhood bakery, café and wine bar at Lock-Keepers Walk was opened by pastry chef Eojin Lee. Enjoy freshly baked bread, toasted sandwiches and special pastries – including fennel and sage sausage rolls made with croissant dough, jalapeño and cheddar sausage rolls, and ‘nduja, ricotta and hot honey buns – as well as cakes available to order. The perfect stop along the Royal Canal.

Tribe, Knocklyon

Tribe’s second location in Rathgar and third in total was once a butcher’s, and is already famous for its New York style bagels in collaboration with micro bakery Fat Baby Bakes. Find flavours like the traditional bacon and cheese, cream cheese and egg or the Chicken Caesar bagel. Expect a bigger space with lots of seating, ideal for groups or after a class at Earthy Pilates Reformer Studio next door.

Morilles Coffee, Rathmines

Founded in 2020, with stops at The Kiosk in Rathgar, Rathfarnham, Ballinteer, a drive-thru in Stillorgan and a new Rathmines location, Morilles Coffee uses the finest South American coffee beans roasted in Dún Laoghaire. They also offer ice cream for little ones.

Butlers Chocolates, Griffith Avenue

Drumcondra locals have a new Butlers Chocolates coffee trailer that is now accessible just off Griffith Avenue in Griffith Wood Estate. The trailer serves Butlers‘ beloved coffee, matcha and a selection of sweet treats, including the mini chocolate bars in every flavour.

Copper & Straw, Palmerston Park

Dublin City Council made significant restorations to the old tearooms to bring beloved café Copper & Straw to the centre of Palmerston Park in Dublin 6, joining its other locations at Aston Quay, Arran Quay and Bray Main Street. Founded by Stephen Kennedy, who worked in higher education but decided to follow his passion to become a barista, opened his first Bray location in 2018. Now, in this dog-friendly space you can get your coffee on with cinnamon swirls, Danish pastries or poached pear and black pudding sausage rolls. The menu is ever-changing, so look out for toasties with bacon and chipotle, prosciutto crudo or a spiced falafel wrap, depending on the season.

Mister Magpie, Blackrock Park

Mister Magpie has been met with a positive reception in its latest location: a Victorian tearoom in Blackrock Park. First built in the late 1800s, the building had fallen into disrepair in recent years, but its restoration by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council brought the landmark back to life, while maintaining the Tudor-style timber frame and wrap-around veranda. Mister Magpie has four other locations, including Ballsbridge, Leeson Street, Merrion Cricket Club and Killiney Hill Tearooms. Expect artisan pastries and savoury goodies, with Bean Inspired Coffee Roasters – a local Dublin roastery where speciality coffee grown by women farmers is sourced and roasted exclusively for them.

B4 Blackrock, Blackrock

A family run hotspot on Carysfort Avenue focused on freshly made bread, ethically-sourced coffee directly from Gashuru in Rwanda and Mafia Matchas. They also offer freshly baked focaccia and new-in sandwiches.

Bread 41, Bray

Since starting Bread 41 in 2018, Eoin Cluskey’s empire has grown from strength to strength, with a fifth location in Bray joining Pearse Street, Stillorgan, Cabinteely and Greystones. There’s no wonder it’s unstoppable with highly covetable baked goods, from its famous range of sourdough breads and chimi churi savoury bakes to praline buns or special goodies the team whip up on any given day. Perch outside with 3FE coffee to fuel up before or after a walk.

Dandelion, Howth

A new market and deli on Main Street in Howth, located in the former Country Market, after many years “behind the stove” chef Aoife Barker has realised her dream in Dandelion. Having most recently created the 147 Deli sandwiches at Chubby’s, the offerings here are similarly mouth-watering. Find everything you need in the fresh produce section, or by delivery.
