A long-awaited long weekend means enjoying the comforts that brings. We have a few suggestions you might want to try out …
Bake a Brown Butter and Rosemary Apple Cake
Kitty Coles shared this recipe from Jess Elliot Dennison’s new cookbook Midweek Recipes and it’s too good not to try! Jess’s brown butter and rosemary apple cake is perfect for this time of year. “I’ve tried and tested it, and I think you’ll all love it. It is so easy to make and is the perfect use for autumn apples,” says Kitty. Bake it for friends and family or just for you, there is no doubt it will get eaten.
Make it cosy
The most important part of relaxing at home is to make your space as cosy as possible. Whether it’s by a fire or candles, light up the room to create ambience and bathe in your favourite scents. If you want to autumn-ise your home completely, see our tips here. Image via; www.neptune.com.
Curl up with a good book
Leading up to Christmas is the time for new releases, so there are so many options to choose from, no matter what genre you’re into. Edel Coffey chooses books to read this season, so be sure to pick one up for this weekend.
A frenzy surrounds any new Sally Rooney publication and Intermezzo (Faber, €21.99), is no different. Intermezzo tells the story of two brothers mourning the death of their father and is exactly the kind of emotionally complicated chess game we’ve come to love from the Co Mayo writer. @edelcoffey
Binge-watch at home
There are so many new series and films to keep us entertained this weekend. If you haven’t started Rivals on Disney+ yet, what are you doing?! This gripping television series showcases Dame Jilly Coopers genius story telling and the expertise of all of the actors involved. See our interview with Victoria Smurfit, where she discusses her complicated character.
If you are in the mood for a riveting new film, Woman of the Hour, is your answer. Directed by and starring Anna Kendrick, this new thriller is based on a true story, so fans of true crime will love it. It is an unusual role for Kendrick, but we also love to see her calling the shots. A revelatory story about how you can’t always believe what you are told – especially when it starts on camera. The opening scene has people shocked. Find more to watch here.
It’s cinema-time
There is nothing better than a trip to the cinema on an autumn day, so here are some new releases we think you might like. The Outrun: Newlyweds Saoirse Ronan and Jack Lowden, our favourite Slow Horses star, have produced Outrun together. The story follows a young woman who, after living life on the edge in London, attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. She returns to the wild beauty of Scotland’s Orkney Islands, where she grew up, as she hopes to heal. Saoirse Ronan has said in recent interviews that the subject matter of alcoholism and addiction is something she has first-hand experience with, from people she is close to. This makes the telling of this story all the more personal, and can speak to many people, whether they know it or not. Watch it in cinemas now.
Set your sights on a set menu
Dine out on a set menu, if you are so inclined to step out of the comfort of your home this weekend. Ciara McQuillan has selected these gorgeous spots that will make you want to visit more than once. From pre-theatre menus at Rosa Madre and Hugos to the early bird menu at Marco Pierre White, Ananda, and vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free options at Glás, these great value options mean you can beat the later crowds. @ciaramcquillan
