Choosing comfortable chairs to go around the dining table is almost as important a decision as choosing living room chairs. Interesting shapes, something structurally unique, add character. The handmade rattan chairs pictured below have a lightening effect on the room. If you have the space, consider generous back-rest options with arms as they are conducive to lingering and chatting. If you don’t have space for a rectangular dining table, try a convivial round. Rugs add warmth, texture, and sound-proofing; a large rug under the dining table will dampen vibrations, especially if used with a noise-reducing carpet underlay. The rug should be larger than the table and leave enough space to pull out the dining chairs without their back legs coming off the rug. Spills are inevitable so short-pile and flat-weave rugs are a practical choice: most suppliers offer stain inhibitor treatments.
