Staying In Or Going Out? Here’s Some Inspiration For The Long Weekend

Splurging on: A payday treat from Rae Feather’s new mini collection, especially the George pants in crepe fabric.

Celebrating: Chinese New Year in the posh surrounds of Jean-Georges Restaurant at The Leinster, Dublin, where Southeast Asian flavours are on the menu.

For something more casual, Bewley’s on Grafton Street is serving a special “Chinese Whispers” afternoon tea experience, on February 1 and 8, in a collaboration with Asia Market. Against a backdrop of traditional Chinese music and cherry blossoms, apple and Chinese five spice scones, Asian patisserie and sandwiches will be served.

Marking: The end of Dry or Damp January, with a visit to The Chancery hotel where its bar is a luxurious combination of velvet sofas, designer furniture and interesting cocktails – the perfect prelude to dinner in its new restaurant Fawn. Worth checking out for the view of the quaint urban garden.

Enjoying: Brigit – Dublin City Celebrating Women featuring 90 events across the city. Look out for the “Shine On: Brigit” projections on buildings and interesting exhibitions such as Deirdre Brennan’s photography project “Looking For Bridget” and “In the Ticking Room” by Eileen Leonard Seely at The Lab until March 1, which focuses on the ideas of time and memory.

A Celebration of Irish Women Artists 2024, organised by Hot Press magazine and Kildare County Council 

Going to: Kildare for more St Brigid Day celebrations, including Nothing Compares – A Celebration of Irish Women Artists at The Moat Theatre in Naas. With MC Laura Whitmore, it stars Imelda May, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Una Healy and Rachael Lavelle, with special guest Sabina Higgins, who will present a spoken word reading. Also catch a special film screening highlighting the contribution of Irish women artists to the world of cinema, plus a busking session in the newly refurbished Naas Library & Cultural Centre.

Getting crafty: At workshops such as Brigit’s Cross Embroidery and Celtic Knot Embroidery at Studio 4 in Dublin, where creative stitching projects are in the line-up. Silverworks will also host classes on metal clay and Claddagh ring forging, and participants can create bespoke jewellery inspired by Irish traditions.

Listening to: A weekly concert series every Sunday at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This week is a performance of Enoch Arden performed by cellist Annette Cleary, pianist Reamonn Keary and narrated by Barry McGovern.

Curling up with a good book: As inspiration, we’re using the the long list for Dublin Literary Award 2025 (worth €100,00 to the winner) with 71 books nominated by libraries in 34 countries. Seven Irish writers made the shortlist including Wild Houses by Colin Barrett, Water by John Boyne, Hagstone by Sinéad Gleeson and Seaborne by Nuala O’Connor.

Visiting: The new The Barrel Sauna. This wellness oasis recently opened behind Uncle Tom’s Cabin pub on Dundrum road and will host a Goddess-Inspired Sauna Session to celebrate Brigit Festival Dublin, with gorgeous murals from artist Kathrina Rupit.

Indulging in: A pampering SeaBody Bliss treatment in Glo Spa & Wellness at Glenlo Abbey Hotel & Estate, Galway. This new signature therapy taps into the regenerative properties of algae and includes massage, mask, serum and smoothies.

Looking forward to: Dr Strangelove at Bord Gais Energy Theatre. Steve Coogan stars in the stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film, from February 5 to 22. Elevate the evening by booking the Circle Club too.

Guilty pleasure: The new three-part documentary No Matter What about Boyzone for some 1990s nostalgia on Sky.
