Located in the picturesque village of Straffan, Co Kildare, 30 minutes from Dublin city centre, this four-star gem is set on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, and blends over eight centuries of history with refined modern hospitality. Originally built in 1288 as a Norman stronghold by Nicholas Barby (who gives his name to the Castle) the Castle’s architecture evolved through Elizabethan and Georgian enlargements, while preserving its authentic character. It’s a naturally photogenic backdrop to any stay or visit.
The property originally opened to visitors as a small guesthouse in 1971 and expanded from its ten original bedrooms into a charming country house hotel. Rock legend Eric Clapton famously owned the property from 1979 to 1987. During that time, he hosted several music events in the Castle’s Green Room and Keep, with many famous musicians visiting and performing. Its current owner, dynamic businesswoman Amanda Torrens, purchased the property in 2021 and since then has embarked on an ambitious programme of renovation and renewal. Regular guests will note the new-look rooms, restaurants and facilities as well as significant sustainability initiatives. For example, earlier this year, 2,500 Irish trees were planted, part of The 100 Million Trees Project.
Many of the 61 rooms reflect the Castle’s long heritage, with antiques, cosy log fires and tranquil garden views contributing to the overall vibe of relaxed luxury. There are several suites, including two bridal suites; many rooms feature four-poster beds. The Presidential Suite seamlessly incorporates a separate dining and sitting room, very generous bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and luxurious bedroom.
Pop in for a morning coffee in the bright and airy Garden Lounge which is decorated with bold contemporary artworks, curated by Gormley’s Gallery. Stay for lunch in The Garden Suite with its impressive vaulted ceilings and chandeliers, which opens onto the Rose Garden and Terrace.
The Haggard Bar, on the grounds, is a cosy old-style pub setting for a relaxed party or event with drinks and casual dining. More elevated is the swish Barton Rooms Bar, with its deep sofas, luxurious fabrics and moody lighting, the perfect prelude to dinner in The Barton Rooms Restaurant where Executive Head Chef Pablo Bernardo is celebrated for his seasonal and locally inspired menus that balance classic elegance with inventive flair. One of the most special places to dine is in the medieval 13th-century Castle Keep – a distinctive setting for private dining, intimate celebrations or themed events.
It’s no surprise with all of these facilities that Barberstown Castle is one of Ireland’s most romantic wedding venues. Receptions are hosted in the 16th-century Banquet Hall, a grand exclusive space with vaulted ceilings, abundant natural daylight and historic charm which can host up to 220-280 guests depending on configuration. The Medieval Courtyard and Gothic gazebo provide memorable outdoor options and are gorgeous spaces for civil ceremonies. This Hall has its own entrance, reception room and private garden so wedding parties are completely separate from other guests. Barberstown Castle has a strict one wedding a day policy and its wedding team works with couples and wedding planners (virtual tours are available) to offer multi-day celebration options. These include pre-wedding gatherings in the Castle Keep to relaxed post-wedding barbecues and social events in The Haggard.
