See Inside This Open-Plan Renovated Loft

NAME: Hungarian designer Sandra Sandor, the woman behind cult fashion label Nanushka ADDRESS: Budapest, Hungary HOME: A renovated loft THE VIBE: 1970s industrial chic

I live in downtown Budapest in a loft apartment next to the Danube with my fiancé and business partner Peter Baldaszti. The loft is an industrial space, formerly a gas factory. It didn’t need too much architectural restoration when we bought it, just some decoration. We maintained the industrial character of the building but softened it with textiles brought back from Morocco and southern Spain. I really like mid-century furniture and pieces from the 1970s, especially the organic shapes and the use of materials from those eras. We source a lot from local vintage furniture dealer Mobelkunst and also find interesting pieces in flea markets – the kitchen chairs came from a flea market in Vienna, for instance. It’s very important for us that we chose practical furniture – it has to be beautiful and at the same time comfortable. It’s difficult to identify a favourite piece as everything we choose is special and has a story – maybe it would be the coffee table in our living room, custom-made by one of Peter’s friends who is a set designer. It’s made of recycled teak which he salvaged during the demolition of an old restaurant interior. What would I love to buy for the apartment? A 1970s Etcetera Lounge Chair by Jan Ekselsius – a timeless, characterful design.

Nanushka is at Brown Thomas Dublin.

The kitchen walls were fabricated in pre-cast concrete.

The coffee table was designed and made by a friend. Vintage leather chairs are from Mobelkunst in Budapest.

A Slim Aarons print of a scene in Andalusia (where Sandor and Baldaszti holiday every year) hangs above the bed. The tiger rug is from a US dealer.

The 1970s desk was a gift to Baldaszti. The wooden screen is a remake of a design by Alvar Aalto.

The leather armchair is from Artcore Antik in Budapest and the pink lamp belonged to Baldaszti’s grandmother.
