The traditional hen party is a cocktail of camp, cliché and crass behaviour. But it can be done in a nicer way – without calling in the kissogram. Start here …
1. Strip it back: The guestlist, that is, not the Chippendales. Invite only a core group of pals – or even organise a two-person hen, for just you and your BFF. Having less people to please means you can do something more personal. We love the idea of a spa weekend away for some proper pampering and relaxation.
2. Order take-out: Not the kind that comes in boxes. Poppy Delevingne’s hen became a pampered sleepover in her hotel room. Follow suit by getting a caterer to bring nibbles. If you prefer to rent, Riverside Paradise in Co Galway sleeps up to twelve and has a local chef available to hire. No need to change out of your Olivia von Halle PJs.
3. Go offline: Ramp up the buzz by enforcing a social media blackout. What happens off Instagram stays off Instagram.
4. Shoot ‘em up: Not a girly girl? Escape for a more rough and tumble country pursuit. At Mount Juliet, Co Kilkenny, you can shoot clay pigeons or do archery. There’s also an Equestrian Centre for horse riding types, plus a Michelin-starred restaurant, should you need replenishing after the hunt; www.mountjuliet.ie.
5. Invite some cocks: It’s the 21st century – friendships don’t always obey a gender divide. What about inviting some male hens, too? Just don’t be tempted to make it a “hag” (combined hen and stag). The joint bash should be the wedding, not the bachelor do.
6. Go private: If you absolutely must spend a night on the town, escape the usual haunts by booking a private cocktail club. Dublin’s hot ticket is The Blind Pig, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar in a secret city centre location – you’ll be contacted with instructions upon booking. Email [email protected].
7. Holiday hen: A hen party makes a good excuse for a girls’ holiday, so seize it. Pick a destination that mixes stylish haunts with and fun things to do, such as buzzy and sun-soaked Lisbon, champagne capital Reims or fashion favourite Antwerp – book brunch at the sumptuous De Foyer, housed in a splendid neoclassical theatre. A bespoke tour will help you find your bearings. Antiques & Boutiques offers style-focused tours of Barcelona, London, Florence and Milan; www.antiquesandboutiques.com.
