If the most popular spring trend is ‘90s minimalism then perhaps the zenith of this look is the slip dress. On the moodboard of every aspiring minimalist – and bohemian – worth their salt, the elusive dress, popularised in the 1990s by Kate, Christy, Naomi et al, has a certain je ne sais quoi. In other words, it’s got an unquantifiable coolness. Or rather, if done right, it endows the wearer with such a flex.
We know Dakota Johnson does ’90s dressing well. (See her denim look that nods to fashion’s favourite decade here.) So it’s not that surprising that this dress trend is part of the actress’ wardrobe repertoire. The star of The Materialists channelled the ’90s cool-girl aesthetic as she wandered the streets of Rome wearing an icy blue silk-satin slip by London label Home of Hai. (She also was joined by Irish actress Jessie Buckley; Johnson is set to star in Alice Rohrwacher’s Three Incestuous Sisters with the Academy Award-winner, as well as Saoirse Ronan and Josh O’Connor.)

As coveted as it is, the slip dress isn’t the easiest of trends to pull off. However, the ease of Johnson’s outfit can’t but inspire. She teamed the slinky dress with a La Ligne knit thrown around her shoulders (we saw a similar styling move recently on Kendall Jenner), a pair of ballet flats and a celestial necklace. Speaking of accessories, a bowling bag which echoes the sleek lines of The Row and a Jessica McCormack gold diamond pinky ring distinguish the look from any ‘90s grunge connotations.
