If, like us, you carry the kitchen sink with you wherever you go, we say embrace it. A woven leather bag in an XL size is perfect for carrying weekend essentials – phone, lipstick, magazine, a good book, a fresh pain. Team it with your favourite coat, preferably a double-breasted style in wool, and ensure the look has a weekend vibe by leaning into laidback footwear.
Tired of jeans? Bored of drab knits? Throw caution to the wind and opt for prints on prints, as seen here on Belgian style influencer Alison Toby. While Toby pairs hers with heels, a print-heavy outfit looks just as good with trainers or of-the-moment loafers. Let your choice of accessories dictate the tone: if you want to dress the outfit down then team it with a trendy suede shoulder bag, or make the look appropriate for eveningwear by teaming it with a bijou bag.
Belt it: dressing for this time of year can feel like you’re swaddled in endless layers. The solution? A belted coat or jacket. If it doesn’t come with one, add your own (vintage belts work excellently, but Massimo Dutti and J Crew also offer great leather and suede options). Consider it an easy way to elevate any outfit.
Experiment with layering. The weather may not be playing ball, but we’re already planning our new season outfits (peruse an edit of the best French-inspired transeasonal looks here) and top of the list is transitional layering to see us through to spring days. We love how this look embraces rich chocolate brown suede, too.
We’re not out of outerwear territory yet. And, in case you missed it, faux fur coats are more popular than ever. Trending now are longer lengths that stretch past the knees, towards the calves (or, even the ankles). Dressy by nature, the key to the look is teaming a dramatic faux fur with casual pieces – think: jeans, knits, even a baseball cap – to ensure you nail that elusive high-low dressing mix.
