Do We Need to Talk About Wall Sconces?

They just make so much sense in a room …

There are some interiors trends that should be put to rest and others that just get better with time. We’re seeing a lot of the latter of late: eiderdowns, ornate wallpaper, tablecloths and valance sheets with heavy frills. Hell, even the dado rail (when executed correctly) is shedding its 1990s connotations and beginning to look fresh again.

There’s something about the wall sconce, particularly, that appeals right now. Maybe because we’re seeing it in so many cool houses at the moment. Or perhaps it’s down to its versatility: from sleek brass finishes which often take centre stage in marbled, modern kitchens to kitsch varieties – if it’s a quirky shape, all the better – that demonstrate your nous when it comes to trawling Etsy. We love the power a sconce has to inject personality into a space.

The trend right now is not just for light fittings. If your budget doesn’t extend to wiring a light fitting, or you’re unable to alter your walls massively, a candelabra also adds colour and texture. Plus, you get to refresh the colour tones by swapping in and out your candles of choice. Win-win.

The moral of the story? Clash, clash, clash. While the above scene by interior design studio Octavia Dickinson is more carefully executed than that, there is something in the spirit of juxtaposing colours and patterns that will always appeal to our wild side.

Maybe it’s the shell, maybe it’s the stripes, maybe it’s the wicker mirror. Either way, there’s something about this situation that greatly appeals.

A sleeker approach to a wall sconce – we love how this fixture enhances the modernity of this kitchen, all the while adding interest for the eye.

True story: sconces do look better in twos. We love the simplicity of a clean white shade and bare plaster walls – it really lets the light fixtures sing.
