Bustier, tube top, strapless top; no matter what the moniker this very 2000s top will strike fear in anyone who is old enough to remember it first time around. (Even if you wore it to a teen disco.) And, while Gen Z has been embracing noughties nostalgia for a while, when Katie Holmes (she who is behind the bradigan – that is, a co-ordinating bra and cardigan twinset – explosion of 2019) recently wore a long-line bustier by Tove with jeans and trainers to an event in New York, our attention was piqued.

What’s the best way to wear it? In truth, by layering it up. Think of layering a shirt or T-shirt with the piece. If this appeals then Mango has done the hard work for your (see below). If you are reluctant to go fully strapless (we hear you), then brands like Khaite have mastered knitted tops with dipping sweetheart necklines that give off a corsetry feeling (see H&M for the high street equivalent). Volume is a good way to go, too. A meringue shape offsets strapless styles well (see the offering from Alexander McQueen, below). Pair yours with dark-washed slim jeans or cigarette trousers, plus a towering heel.
