Princess Beatrice announced her engagement today to her boyfriend of two years, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, showing off a sophisticated ring designed by London-based Irish jeweller, Shaun Leane.
The ring appears to be a round or cushion cut natural diamond (rather than lab grown) flanked by diamond baguettes and bears the hallmarks of his signature style – elegance and attention to detail. “I am so honoured Edoardo chose to work with me to design the engagement ring for Princess Beatrice and to have been involved in this special moment in their lives,” Leane shared on Instagram. “The bespoke experience was a beautiful journey; from imagining the design with Edoardo to the crafting of the finished rings. Being able to incorporate both Edoardo and Princess Beatrice’s characters into the design has resulted in a unique ring that represents their love and lives entwining.”
Leane is no stranger to royal patronage – the Duchess of Sussex wore his gold vermeil talon earrings earlier this year and his designs have appeared on the catwalk – notably on Cara Delevingne at the Balmain SS19 show. His work has been described as “antiques of the future.”
Having trained in London’s jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden, Leane is known for his longstanding collaboration with the late Alexander McQueen, including the iconic coiled corset in McQueen’s AW 1999 show. He has also collaborated with Daphne Guinness, Nick Knight, Boucheron and Damien Hirst and many of his pieces are on display at the V&A Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
His creations are available exclusively at Weir & Sons in Ireland, including the Shaun Leane for Weirs earrings, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the store and based on a seminal piece in his collection, the Hook earrings. “I wanted to create a piece that echoes our history and signature, and demonstrates the longevity and presence of such a wonderful store.” Leane chose to set the earrings with tsavorite, echoing the green décor of the store. Choose from silver, €440, or gold vermeil, €485.
