Brian Woulfe’s route into interior design was anything but conventional. Growing up on a farm in Limerick, his early ambition was to become a concert pianist – a dream that took him to London and an entirely different direction before fate intervened.
Attendees of his conversation at Design Week Dublin, moderated by architect Amanda Bone, were treated to a champagne reception in advance of Brian taking to the stage at Anantara The Marker and it set the tone for the bubbly evening that followed.
Brian entertained with stories of his route into the industry. While helping a friend with a “spreadsheet job” on a site, he was in the right place at the right time. The interior designer working on the project was fired. Brian stepped in to take over, discovering a natural affinity for the work and, in the process, the beginnings of what would become a lifelong passion. From that fortuitous start, he went on to build a thriving design business that has taken him across continents and connected him with some of the industry’s most influential names.
A self-confessed “yes man”, Brian reflected on how his willingness to embrace opportunities (even when they led him into unfamiliar territory) shaped his career. Saying yes, he says, opened doors, creating lasting connections and leading to projects he could never have anticipated.
Taking the audience through a selection of projects via slides, Brian chatted openly about the breadth of his work and the thinking behind it. Among the projects featured were his own London apartment and country vicarage, offering a glimpse into his personal design sensibility.
He was refreshingly candid about his approach, admitting that drawing is not his greatest strength. Instead, Brian described himself as a “big picture” man, more interested in seeing how all the elements of a project come together than getting caught up in the minutiae.
His story was a reminder that careers rarely follow a straight line, and that sometimes the most unexpected opportunities can lead somewhere extraordinary.
Many attendees weren’t quite ready to end the party there, which was just as well as Minima, the iconic design store founded by Helen Kilmartin, was celebrating its 30th anniversary alongside the 100th anniversary of Eileen Gray’s iconic Bibendum chair at an exclusive design event during Design Week Dublin, in its Hanover Quay showroom.
