From gripping psychological thrillers, to murder mysteries and fantastical comedies, these are the new releases to watch this weekend …
Mothers’ Instinct on Netflix
This 2024 psychological thriller will have us all at the edge of our seats this weekend. Starring two Academy award winners, Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, Mothers’ Instinct follows the story of housewives Alice (Chastain) and Celine (Hathaway) who are best friends and neighbours who seem to have it all. However, when a tragic accident shatters the harmony of their lives, guilt, suspicion and paranoia begin to unravel their sisterly bond. Dive into this 1960s world of chic fashion, tensions rising and these two powerhouse actors. Watch it on Netflix this weekend. Photograph via Netflix.
The Perfect Couple on Netflix
It’s finally here! The Perfect Couple is out on Netflix, Thursday September 5. Starring Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning and the Irish contingent Eve Hewson and Jack Reynor of Midsommar and Sing Street, what an epic casting for what is set to be a gripping story. Written by Elin Hilderbrand, expert of Nantucket fiction, this story will fill the Pretty Little Lies and White Lotus holes in our lives, says Sarah Macken.
The premise of the new thriller and six-part limited series is as follows: a wealthy family, led by its matriarch, famous novelist Greer Garrison-Winbury (played by Kidman), gathers on the island of Nantucket for the wedding of Garrison-Winbury’s son. The setting is glamorous, but – as suspected – not everything is as it seems. On the eve of the big day, a body is found on the beach and, suddenly, everyone in the wedding party goes from guest to suspect. Equally, real life takes a turn as dramatic as one of Garrison-Winbury’s fiction plots. Sarah Macken has done a deep-dive so you don’t have to – read more about The Perfect Couple here. Slow Horses on Apple TV
The 2024 nominee for nine Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, is back for Season 4 with episodes releases every Wednesday. The first one is out now. If you haven’t watched this yet, we seriously urge you to – Slow Horses is genius. The quick-witted spy thriller continues to follow the dysfunctional team of MI5 agents and their know-it-all boss, the notorious and hilariously slobbish Jackson Lamb played by the wonderful Gary Oldman. Jack Lowden (recently married to Saoirse Ronan!) plays Lamb’s colleague and a completely chaotic agent River Cartwright, while Kirsten Scott Thomas plays the severe Diana Taverner who is Second Desk at MI5, yearning for First Desk. No doubt, this next season will have plenty of twists and turns, a big and exciting plot and lots of mess-ups from the team, making for a very entertaining series. Watch it this weekend and enjoy. The Boy That Never Was on RTÉ 1
Based on the novel by Karen Perry, The Boy That Never Was is being TALKED about and we are making sure to flick it on this weekend. The story follows a couple living in Morocco with their two sons. After an earthquake, their youngest son vanishes without a trace and is presumed dead. This completely turns the couples’ world upside down as they experience the worst trauma a parent can face. Three years later, the couple spot a young boy resembling their son Dillon with a red haired woman in Dublin and they begin their desperate search for the truth – with plenty of plot twists and turns in there. The four-part series stars Colin Morgan, Toni O’Rourke, Kerr Logan and Simon Callow. With a similar feeling to The Missing, this will be a gripping show from start to finish and will set you up for some good watching for a few rainy days this weekend. Watch it on RTÉ 1 on Sunday at 9.30pm. Photograph via RTÉ.
