Whether we’re scoping out the style on the streets of Paris or New York, a simple white T-shirt is always the most elevated of staples. But where do we shop the best white T-shirts for spring? “I tend to wear black T-shirts rather than white as I’m too messy for white! However, I wore a Zara Home white tee recently, it’s 100 per cent cotton and had a lovely weight and neat cut. I love the idea of wearing it with white cotton trousers,” says Sarah Halliwell, Beauty Editor. “I aspire to James Perse T-shirts as they’re so soft. But H&M Basics are very similar fabric, too,” Halliwell notes. White cotton T-shirt, €19.99; www.zarahome.com.

“Last year, I wore Zara’s sleeveless white T-shirt with shoulder pads as endorsed by Trinny Woodall who swears by this staple. I can see why – it adds definition and transforms the silhouette of jackets and sweaters. It also looks good solo with jeans or wide-leg trousers. T-shirt necklines are key for me – they should be neither too wide, nor too low. As an investment piece, I also have my eye on a fitted rib crew-neck tee from Me+Em to wear with jeans and a blazer,” says Penny McCormick, Contributing Editor. “COS is a go-to brand for great white T-shirts – but the really heavy-weight versions aren’t for me. Although I prefer the look of the heavier Clean Cut tee, the lighter 24/7 tee has a slightly lower neckline and the sleeve is cut differently, which is a consideration if you have a larger chest,” says Aislinn Coffey, Style Editor. White 24/7 organic cotton T-shirt, €25, at COS.

“I also tried a Bite Studios elevated off-white tee with inbuilt scarf and it was fabulous in real life – the drape!” adds Coffey. Off-white cashmere and lyocell T-shirt with inbuilt scarf, €250; www.bitestudios.com.

“A great white T-shirt is a rare find and, to be honest, I’m still on the hunt. Having tried both M&S and COS, I’m considering an investment piece as my next purchase. Leset’s Margot T-shirt, with its long sleeves, is cut for a slightly looser fit, which is more flattering. In an ideal world, I’d purchase the brand’s Rio stretch stirrup black leggings, while I’m at it,” says Sarah Macken, Contributing Editor.
