Spring SPFs: 3 Great Daily Skin Protectors We’re Wearing Now

since it’s officially spring, you need some skin protection – so we’ve picked three that look and feel good, while doing their job …

While thinking of your base at this time of year, you also need to consider skin protection – though having an SPF in your make-up is good, (we’ve shared our favourite new foundations for more mature skin in this post) wearing a separate SPF is much better. Serums, treatments etc are all well and good – but protection is the key thing you can do to keep your skin looking its best. Whether the sun is in or out, at this time of year, invest in a formula that you like wearing and that doesn’t give you that ghostly pallor. Again, it’s your single most important skincare investment. These start from under a tenner:

1 Currently I’m using Ultraceuticals Ultra UV Protective Moisturiser SPF50 (50ml, currently free with their Micellar Solution 200ml, €29.50, at www.ultraceuticals.com and stockists nationwide). With Australian suncare wizardry, it’s really light to apply and does not clog the skin or make you look pasty; it’s a genuinely great formula.

2 Try also Garnier’s SkinActive Vitamin C 2in1 Brightening Serum Cream SPF25, a neat non-greasy option that’s good for travel as it’s doing a few things at once. It has a pleasant orangey smell and is light and easy to wear. Currently on offer at €9.33 at www.Boots.ie (usually €13.99).

3 Consultant dermatologist Rosemary Coleman notes: “This year we’re seeing more emphasis on physical sunblock, ie zinc oxide, for wider-spectrum protection. Dermacrest Sheerzinc SPF30 is a new sunscreen made with over 18 per cent zinc oxide, and it’s invisible on the skin; it’s a top sunblock to use over your moisturiser.” €65, at www.drcolemanskinstore.ie
