These perfectly petite kitchens are a joy to behold

Our Instagram saved folder is brimming with all kinds of kitchens, and through our research we have come to realise that a smaller-sized kitchen might just offer a lot more opportunity for personalisation than a larger kitchen one. If your floorplan or budget doesn’t allow for a large kitchen, it becomes the incentive to get creative. Small kitchen design means less spending on cabinetry and keeping more budget for kitchen additions that reflect your personality. The kitchen is the heart of the home – it has to feel like you. Layout is an important factor to consider, as are different colours and materials. Carefully placed furniture cannot be overlooked and neither can the importance of artwork – especially if you have done it yourself. Through these tweaks and tricks – your kitchen will feel bigger and feel personal to you. Here is a selection of our favourite Instagram inspiration…
PAINT IT YOURSELF
Illustrator, ceramicist and canary-keeper Polly Fern painted a “Romantic Vase” mural and other motifs on her white tiles that run around her kitchen, some of them depicting stories of the town she lives in. She sourced a large piece of specimen marble at auction to sink into the oak worktop which livens up the compact prep station considerably. By incorporating her own style and paintwork in this smaller kitchen, Polly has made it her own and brought it to life! @pollyfern
COOK WITH COLOUR
You can never go wrong with incorporating colour into your kitchen, especially if it is smaller in size. A painted wall or a block colour on the cabinetry will make a space feel bigger, brighter and give the whole room character. @swantjehinrichsen
SKY-LIT SPACE
This buttery converted attic kitchen is a prime example of how utter gorgeousness can be achieved in a small space. Capturing the attic’s natural light is paramount: with these Velux windows and the quirky tiled floor, the room feels elevated, fresh and gorgeous.?@tarn_london
PLY VIBE
Ply is not only a versatile and durable material, but it adds a natural element to your kitchen space in a modern, minimal way. It also serves as the perfect backdrop for the colours and pattern that you might wish to incorporate in various items, like pendant lights and lined tiles. @themodernhouse
THE SHOWCASE
The hooks and open shelving in this kitchen not only act as storage but also offer the perfect opportunity to showcase your beautiful, hand-selected tableware and glassware. We cannot ignore the wow fuschia cabinetry and plum chequerboard tiles in this kitchen – what a groovy set-up!? @allerdorset
FUNKY FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE
Choose neat, well thought-out furniture to perfectly fit the space. A kitchen bench is a clever addition in a smaller kitchen, as is a built-in window bench or reading nook. Use furniture to add interesting texture and colour. @themodernhouse
PANEL DISCUSSION
We just can’t get enough of this petite pink kitchen designed by Nigel of Neptune Home. The vertical tongue-and-groove panelling is fresh and pretty, while making the room feel bigger. @neptunehomeofficial
UNIQUELY YOU
The space may be minimal but fill it with everything that reflects you. Create your safe space, the heart of your home, and fill it with flowers, artwork and objects that reflect your personality and make you smile. It is your little haven – make it so.?@interior_cosiness
