These Fashionable Rugs Are Guaranteed To Upgrade Any Living Space

The latest dispatch of rugs, by the most Instagrammable of brands, should most definitely be seen …

In case you hadn’t noticed, now’s a good time for rugs. Not least because the weather is about to turn (and when it does there’s nothing that feels cosier than a plush rug to pad around on) but there’s something about the array of rugs coming to market that feels fresh – and ultra-covetable.

Perhaps it’s the intersection of the fashion and interior worlds. Former fashion designer Henry Holland has just launched a range of rugs with Hackney-based brand Floor Story, while influencer and interior designer Athena Calderone’s collaboration with Beni Rugs is racking up likes by the thousand on Instagram. (See: Calderone posing in her nicely neutral Brooklyn brownstone whilst wearing an all-white outfit by Sydney-based Matin Studio.)

Calderone wanted her collection to represent an imperfect kind of symmetry. “The yarns are hand-dyed and then washed, giving everything this element of imperfection and surprise,” she told Architectural Digest. There was something about embracing the imperfections, dismantling how things ‘should’ be: “I would start with a pattern and then pull things away.”

The collaboration between Swedish rug makers Nordic Knots and British design studio Campbell Rey is a celebration of ‘out out’ design. The collection reinvents classic colours and shapes with a modern spin.

If you’re a neutral devotee you may never stray from old-reliable jute or sisal. And with good reason – such fabrics are both hard-working and extremely easy on the eye, no matter the space. (Tip: sisal works best in downstairs rooms only, rather than a bedroom. The fabric is a little too rough for bare feet.) Tigmi Trading has put a nice twist on the classic jute rug by adding a sweet scallop edge.

Irish favourite Ceadogán, above, blends abstract patterns with luxury craftsmanship. We love how the rugs were brought to life at the travelling exhibition dedicated to Eileen Gray Making and Momentum: In Conversation with Eileen Gray, curated by Wexford-born fashion designer Richard Malone.

Henry Holland’s psychedelic rugs – a collaboration with London label Floor Story – are a tribute to 90s rave culture. Expect out-there patterns, clashing colour combinations – and even the odd smiley face.
