This season’s fanciest watches and jewellery, with their fancy price tags, are things of beauty destined to be cherished and passed down through the generations, and rightly so. But if you treat them like the good silver, the good cutlery, the good glasses, to be taken out of the cupboard and dusted off a few times a year, on a cost-per-wear basis, they will not deliver a return on investment! Rather, wear your good watch or jewellery as often as you can – if that means with jeans, a sweater and a pair of trainers, so much the better.
Just as this season Louise Vuitton has turned the iconic Neverfull bag inside out with a reversible version (its signature lining on the outside), we say, turn jewellery conventions upside down.
A diamond-encrusted Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, its bezel adorned with sparkly brilliant-cut dazzlers, Patek Philppe’s classic Twenty~4, reinvented in rose gold with a purple lacquer dial for its 25th anniversary, or Longines’ updated bite-sized Mini DolceVita watch with chic double strap, look coolest when worn with autumn’s bougie basics.

Autumn’s latest pieces resonate with references that enrich their backstories: Boodles has taken inspiration from New York’s Fifth Avenue’s iconic Art Deco architecture for its spectacular collection of modern cocktail rings, earrings and necklaces with a dazzling geometric glamour (see them at Boodles on Grafton Street).
Elsa Peretti’s new beaten gold Split cuff for Tiffany & Co. has a bold anatomical design, which hugs the wrist, and makes a statement. Peretti died in 2021 but her legacy lives on, the pieces still bearing her distinctive handprint.
The My Dior collection, dreamed up for Dior by Victoire de Castellane, features the graphic lines of the cane seats which appeared on the Napoleon III chairs at Christian Dior’s first show in 1947, at 30 avenue Montaigne.
Jeans, sweaters and dark trainers form the bedrock of your casual wardrobe this season, a wine-dark sweater accentuating the shine of gold jewellery. Hermès’ Stately Wheels scarf, the latest addition to the Hermès stable, worn with a Victoria Beckham camel duffel coat, high street jeans, tee and trainers, is pure high and low.
