Looking For a New Foundation For Autumn? This Is The One We’re Wearing

We’ve got the inside track on Chanel’s Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation, launching next week …

It’s not easy to find the perfect foundation. Especially at the moment, when it’s trickier to get to the counter and try out shades. So we asked Chanel make-up artist and red carpet supremo Kay Montano (whose clients include Thandie Newton, Julianne Moore and Zoe Kravitz) for advice. Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation is about to land and it’s a lightweight formula that gives a sheer, radiant finish without feeling at all powdery. Available in 35 shades, it evens out the skin and features an active ingredient, kalanchoe extract, derived from a Madagascar plant, that creates a barrier against pollution.

We’ve been trying out a range of new autumn bases, and find this a great option if you’re looking for a natural-looking, lasting finish with hydration – something that’s not easy to find. I like this because it doesn’t feel or look like you’re wearing foundation; think of it as your little black dress of daily skincare, quick and easy to slip on.

Chanel make-up artist Kay Montano gave us some expert tips on how to find and apply the perfect base:

Choosing your perfect foundation shade …

“It’s best to try a few shades on the lower part of your face and neck to find one that blends seamlessly with your skin tone in natural daylight. Electrical light changes the appearance of colour tone, often leading to the wrong colour choice.”

Determine your undertone …

“If your skin looks pink, has hints of blue or you have a reddish complexion, your undertone is most likely cool and will best match with rosé – rosy. If your complexion is more peach, golden or yellow then you likely have a warm undertone and will best match with doré – golden. If your complexion isn’t noticeably cool or warm, you likely have a neutral undertone and will best match with beige.”

Applying liquid foundation …

“This is a personal preference – some like brushes, some prefer sponges and some just use their fingers. I always apply a 50p coin-sized amount of foundation to the back of my hand, then use a sponge or brush and apply from the centre of the face (around the nose) outward. It should be a seamless and sheer veil by the time it reaches the edges of the face.”

Prep your skin for foundation …

“After cleansing, ensure your skin is not too oily or too dry. You want your base to last, so you don’t want to load your skin with too much product. I avoid rich creams under foundation and opt for something light yet hydrating, like Chanel Hydra Beauty Camellia Water Cream.”

Insider tips …

“Although this depends on the artist’s aesthetic, most fashion and red carpet-based make-up artists tend to go for fresh-looking skin, even if there is a smokey eye or bold lip. Actresses want their skin to look ‘perfect’, but they don’t want to look as though they are wearing lots of foundation. Therefore, we conceal where we need to and leave the rest of the skin as fresh as we can, especially when the make-up look is strong. We also tend to use our fingers to do any final foundation blending as this helps it become one with the skin.”

We say …

To add a post-holiday warmth to your skin, buff on the Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream (€43) – it gives a lovely bit of colour without looking obvious. Finish with Sheer Highlighting Fluid (€43) high up on cheekbones to catch the light and make skin gleam. Both from the Les Beiges range and available now.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation, €50, launches on September 4 at counters nationwide.
