Little Lifts: The Micro Moments Making Us Feel Good In This Uncertain December

The little lifts boosting our mood this week …

Lately, it can all feel a bit doom and gloom; the news is heavy, the weather is freezing over and it seems there’s constant talk of further restrictions and Covid-19 variants. In a bid to keep spirits high we’re focusing on the joy of little lifts right now. Here’s what’s brightening this week for members of THE GLOSS team.

I’m planning a Christmas tree decorating party this Friday for my godson. We will buy the tree on Wednesday evening (December 1) so it is up and ready to decorate. I am going to post an invitation through his letter box so he can get excited, too. I plan to set up a bauble station (I’ll buy him his own ornaments to hang –  which he can add to each year. I’ll get them at Formality at The Cowshed or Søstrene Grene). We will pre-string the lights and have a turning on ceremony once the baubles are up. Between now and then, I’ll make a festive playlist with kid-friendly favourites and have it ready to stream, light the advent candle, organise some festive treats (he likes anything with sugar in it!) and maybe even an adult tipple or two. I will also buy a nearly non-decorated fir wreath from an old-fashioned newsagents in Deansgrange. After removing the existing red bow, we can add some pretty extras and some lights.

After the past two years with no international travel, a trip to Paris last weekend was just what I needed to reset before the end of the year. I’d forgotten how much a break from the norm can refresh and rejuvenate you. While it was fascinating just being in another city, walking around, seeing different sights and hearing different sounds, a highlight was a visit to the Centre Pompidou to see its collection of modern art. From Yves Klein’s Blue to a room filled with Joan Miró’s large-scale paintings and another with Kandinsky’s eclectic collections, it was a feast for the senses. Whatever looms this month, this trip will keep me going for a long time … and if we are confined to our homes again, at least I’ll have time to take out my paint brushes!

I’ve been losing myself in the sublime Peter Jackson-directed Beatles documentary, Get Back. It’s utterly mesmerising. You watch some of the world’s greatest songs being created before your eyes, and it’s just breathtaking. Apart from the music, I am enthralled by the style, particularly George Harrison’s – he makes me want to wear a black furry jacket and raspberry roll neck. Meanwhile, John Lennon has some fine all-white get-ups and fur jacket moments. The whole thing is a revelation, and a most magical work of art.

Also: Dr Hauschka’s Lemon Shower Cream for an uplifting blast of citrus in the morning; Seabody’s Movement vitamins (pictured, above) containing the finest Kerry seaweed extract, to support bones and muscles when you’re playing sport – this smart new skincare and supplements brand is made in Tralee; getting pictures framed at Cornelscourt Glass – I’m delighted to discover this expert and friendly family-run spot, who specialise in mirrors, too.

A bunch of pink flowers. It’s not usually a colour we associate with this time of year, but a vase of fuschia snapdragons and taffy roses has brought life to my coffee table this week. (Much needed, as I’m definitely experiencing a pre-Christmas slump.) The wash of pink has been such a mood-booster I’m considering incorporating a blush wall or piece of furniture into the space. I’ve also dotted some narcissus bulbs around the living room – a few on my coffee table and my sideboard. I repotted them into miniature terracotta pots to give them some space to flourish, on the advice of the super-personable team at Joly’s garden centre in Glenealy, Co Wicklow. I’m hoping I might see a flash of yellow this side of Christmas.

Putting some paint on paper, however inexpertly, has been a lift over the last two weeks. I’ve been adding some splodges to two painting kits; one is a cheap paint-by-numbers canvas of a rose I picked up in Lidl (always a source of interesting finds) and the other a Christmas scene at Somerset House, London, created by Masterpeace, which I’ve had on the go for ages and want to finish. Though quite a different context, every time I make a mess I can’t help thinking of that quote from Sex and the City, “When Big colours … he rarely stays inside the lines.”
