Julia Roberts’ Wardrobe In ‘After The Hunt’ Is All About Luxe Staples

Luca Guadagnino’s psychological thriller After The Hunt is rich in terms of themes, set design and, of course, fashion. We’re coveting Julia Roberts’ look …

In his new film After The Hunt, Italian director Luca Guadagnino excels at presenting a rich (literally), textured filmmaking aesthetic. Each scene unfurls with decadent detailing. In the opening minutes, we’re presented with a soirée at the (edible) pre-war apartment of Alma Imhoff, played by Julia Roberts, where the Yale professor ponders, amidst both peers and students, the double standards of woke culture (surely, a sign of what’s to come), wearing an ecru suit by Toteme. Her co-star Ayo Edebiri, who plays Maggie, a PHD student who accuses Alma’s colleague of sexual assault (and is Alma’s would-be acolyte), is also dressed in suiting – a black oversized tuxedo: another nod to the psychological thriller’s main storyline which questions whether imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

It is, according to After The Hunt’s sartorial choices. Throughout the film, Maggie emulates her mentor Alma’s look. Which, for the record, is entirely covetable. Throwing new light on the dark academia aesthetic, Roberts’ outfits are both highbrow and surprisingly wearable. Her character embodies fashion’s ‘thinking woman’ (the kind who worships at the altar of minimalism and will only ever associate Celine with Phoebe Philo). Sophisticated brands like the aforementioned Swedish label Toteme are in the mix alongside quiet luxury stalwarts The Row and Lemaire.

Indeed, Alma is the dream shopper, investing in hero buys from considered brands that she wears on repeat. It’s a refreshingly casual look, however – Alma spends much of the film in a pair of cropped wide-leg white jeans and flat black loafers, alternating between excellent blazers and grey crewneck jumpers on top. The blazers, which lean into a boxy shoulder – as seen at French brand The Frankie Shop – are a nod to power dressing in the year 2025. Perhaps the film embraces the hard edges of suiting to convey a kind of masculinity appropriate for navigating an Ivy League setting. Then there are the quirks, the low-brow, practical pieces which carry the jangle of attainability, including a canvas red and cream monogram book bag by LL Bean.

Another key buy is a houndstooth brown blazer by Celine. It’s a fitting brand alignment as the film’s costume designer Giulia Piersanti is also Celine’s head of knitwear. Honourable mention must go also to Hank’s Ralph Lauren denim shirt. Played by Andrew Garfield, Hank sits on the ironic side of wasp dressing with classic knits and leather satchels nodding to the film’s setting of New Haven and the Yale campus. And of course, the striped sofa in Alma’s apartment which, frankly, deserves a think-piece of its own …
