It was immersive, diaphanous and dreamlike. Models wore rococo-inspired outfits of pouf skirts, lacy culottes, puff sleeves, floral-embellished blouses and mini-crinolines, accessorised by mohawk-style headpieces, bows and chokers. This gave the impression the models had dived into a dressing up box of dreams before taking to the catwalk.
Maria Grazia Chuiri said she wanted the feminine, romantic collection to belong to neither the “past nor future, between childhood and adulthood, dream and reality.” She explained that her inspiration came from art, the Dior archives and undoubtedly Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

The recent Surrealist exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in Paris was another formative influence as was the Trapèze line and Yves Saint Laurent’s very first collection for Dior, presented in 1958. It was repurposed with moiré fabrics and little skirts which were paired with fitted tailcoats accentuating the contrasting proportions.

On the walls of the museum, nine paintings by Indian artist Rithika Merchant entitled “The Flowers We Grew”, had been translated into large scale textile panels by Karishma Swali and the Chanakya ateliers and Chanakya School of Craft. These blended botanical motifs and symbols and are in situ until February 2.
The show received a standing ovation from guests, including US Vogue editor, Anna Wintour. Perhaps this has confounded rumours that Maria Grazia Chiuri is leaving Dior, to be replaced by Irish designer Jonathan Anderson.
