How The Slogan Top Got Its Groove Back

We know that fashion and film are more intertwined than ever, which is why a recent sighting of Zendaya in a slogan T-shirt on the promotional run for her latest film The Drama stirred a style craving.

Zendaya’s tee – made by A24 in collaboration with New York label Emily Dawn Long – boasts the phrase ‘To Be Loved Is To Be Known’ which is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the doomed paramours depicted in The Drama. Sadly, while Zendaya’s character Emma and Charlie, played by Robert Pattinson, may have nailed the wardrobe brief for high-low Boston hipster creatives, this particular sentiment may be beyond them.

It all feels nicely nostalgic, actually. For millennials, an acerbic quip is essential to a great slogan top. See: Britney Spears’ now-iconic ‘Dump Him’ tee or Drew Barrymore’s ‘My Boyfriend Is Out Of Town’ T-shirt, worn to the premiere of Charlie’s Angels 2 in 2003 (teamed with leather pants and a bottle of Dom Pérignon, swigged from the neck), the sartorial precursor to updating your relationship status on Facebook.

On a related note, the slogan top is closely allied with its sister – the logo top, another Y2K aesthetic that’s enjoying a comeback. See the just-dropped collaboration between Victoria Beckham and GAP (sadly, not available here) which revives the GAP grey French terry logo hoodie. Does it really have parlance now? In a bid to make it of-the-moment, the fashion crowd is wearing the hoodie with capri lengths and simple black flip-flops, plumping for a more trend-driven look.

Personally, we gravitate towards Beckham’s ‘Smiling On The Inside’ T-shirt, which has zing, or the ‘Too old for DiCaprio’ one-liner emblazoned on the cotton tee below: we prefer our graphic tops with a bit more wit.
