Designer Misha Nonoo On Husband Shirts And Holiday Essentials

Known for her pared back style and iconic white shirts, Misha Nonoo’s capsule approach to design is reflected in her own summer wardrobe …

We were in New York just before lockdown but went out to the Hamptons in order to have a little more space. I became a Mum during this surreal period, and I am grateful to be spending time together as a three. Caring for Leo and creating a family routine has been a source of refuge for me, though it isn’t always easy. He reminds me daily of how lucky I am and I’m thankful that my family is healthy – I have a great support network of friends and we have been checking on each other constantly. Now that restrictions have eased I can finally introduce Leo to our closest friends and family. I am also looking forward to getting back to more of a routine – I missed the office and the buzz of New York City. Things are slowly starting to ease with outdoor dining and construction sites reopening, but we are quite a way off normality. We just reopened our flagship store in the Meatpacking district too.

Lockdown has definitely allowed me to look at the bigger picture – looking at our five year plan instead of perhaps the immediate future/next six months as that is much harder to predict. However, one constant is we remain committed to sustainability. As each order is placed, each garment is cut and sewn, reducing garment waste, the largest source of pollution in the industry, by 90 per cent. We plan to expand our eco-friendly efforts with garments made from natural fibres and zero waste production methods. Customers can check out our Green Leaf Initiative and see which pieces are made from natural fibres as they’re introduced throughout the year.

The success of our recent collaboration with Smart Works was very exciting because our values as a brand perfectly align with Smart Works’ amazing mission of helping women succeed in the workforce. We’ve always wanted to provide women with versatile, timeless clothing that helps give them confidence in their professional life. Through the one-for-one model, we were able to donate 1,500 shirts to Smart Works, and help that many more women realise their potential.

We have just launched the Husband Shirt Builder on our website because we’ve expanded the style to various colours, materials, and stud metals, and want every customer to be able to create their perfect combination. We’re always exploring ways to make online shopping a personal experience, whether it be through virtual one-on-one advice with our stylists, or creating a one of a kind Husband Shirt.

People always ask me how I wear the Husband shirt but it completely depends where I am going. If I am dressing it up, I tend to wear my Husband Shirt with black pants, killer heels and statement earrings. If dressing down, blue jeans and Veja sneakers are the key accessories.

This summer Mike [Hess, her husband], Leo and I will be spending some time in Malibu, but have no concrete plans just yet. An ideal day would be Sunlife for a breakfast smoothie before browsing at the Malibu Country Mart, Soho Beach House for brunch and Café Habana for a fun night out. We also hope to be able to get back to London at some point soon, but we shall see how things go. We always stay at The Connaught. Other regular haunts are The Conran Shop for browsing, The Good Life Eatery for matcha lattes, and Chiltern Firehouse for cocktails.

As for summer essentials – I am a huge fan of Dr Barbara Sturm skincare, and am never without Bobbi Brown’s Eye Opening mascara and some Essie nail varnish for touch-ups. I always pack a book – at the moment I’m reading Bob Iger’s The Ride Of A Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company. Marysia swimwear is another must-have. I love to pair the Girlfriend Tee in white or black with our Austen skirt. We have also recently launched the Aegean linen wrap dress which I will be living in this summer.
