Irish interior designer Geri O’Toole is known for her “do it once, do it well” design philosophy which prioritises her clients’ emotional attachment to a space – her ultimate goal is to create deeply comforting sanctuaries.
It was this ethos which no doubt attracted Rosanna Davison to Geri’s Limerick-based practice when she was searching for the right “forever home” with her husband Wes and their three children. Geri explains, “Rosanna contacted me directly about a renovation project. She had been searching for the right home for around four years. Ultimately Rosanna and Wes chose to substantially rework their existing property and described their aim as future-proofing the house for the next 20–30 years.”
From the outset, the focus was on creating a home that felt personal, warm and considered, while also being practical for family life. The design needed to balance sophisticated interiors with spaces that could genuinely be lived in and enjoyed by the whole family.
Geri explains: “There were several key redesigns within the project, most notably on the ground floor, opening up the existing kitchen to create a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. This was a significant transformation and completely changed how the main living areas connected and functioned. The original fireplace was removed and replaced with bespoke fire place in Viola Marble.”
Rosanna and Wes loved the idea of Crittal doors, a coffee station was also important. Geri encouraged them to go for the natural stone used in the coffee dock area which tied in seamlessly with the fireplace. Practicality was very important for them with a busy household, so Silestone by Consentino was used on all the work tops. As the couple wanted a light, bright colour scheme Geri brought in a contrast in colour on the unusually shaped island unit. “We worked alongside Newcastle to create the bespoke cabinetry, ensuring the joinery was both practical and beautifully integrated into the overall design.”
Off the open plan living area is a wrap around terrace which was freshened up with paint and is perfect for entertaining. It also houses an ice bath, which is covered when not in use.
Upstairs, the master bedroom also underwent a complete layout revision. “We increased the size of the bedroom by closing off a mezzanine area that was no longer required, which allowed us to create a much more generous primary suite, including a new en-suite and walk-in wardrobe.” Geri used a textured Shantung wallpaper from Nobilis to replicate the feel and look of raw silk which was complemented by a Hazelhatch paint colour from Curator.
Colour was also an important element of the design, particularly the use of pink. “We started with a very soft, neutral backdrop and introduced blush, coral and dusty pink through upholstery, trims, fabrics and smaller details. This kept the scheme feminine and warm without becoming overly sweet.
The Art Deco influence was deliberately subtle. “We brought the aesthetic through the detailing — curves, symmetry, fluted joinery, decorative trims and touches of brass. These elements add a sense of elegance and glamour while keeping the overall interior contemporary, comfortable and timeless.”
If you are inspired to recreate this look, Geri advises starting with one beautifully patterned fabric or a statement piece in a blush or coral tone. From there, pull out two or three related shades and repeat them subtly throughout the room.
Keep the larger architectural elements relatively neutral and allow colour, texture and detailing to bring the personality. This creates a layered and considered scheme rather than one where a single colour becomes overwhelming.
“It’s often the smaller details that make a room feel really special”, says Geri. “One of our favourite details in this project is the bullion fringe on the bespoke chair, available from Geri Designs, in the walk-in wardrobe — a small but beautiful finishing touch that adds softness, texture and a little sense of glamour.”
