What’s the verdict? …
VIBE Sleek, white-on-white terraced retreat, between Amalfi and Positano, perfect for channelling Slim Aarons’ iconic photoshoots, soaking up the sun and avoiding the crowds.
NEED TO KNOW The hotel was developed by the Irollo de Lutiis family who invested some €30m and four years to perfect its distinctive charm. They were inspired by the Italian phrase bien vivre, to live well. This ethos is seen in the service and design – a mix of Mediterranean style and Italian elegance deftly delivered with a light, minimalist touch.
A corner suite.
ROOMS There are 35, most of which are suites. Each has a balcony with a sea view, some with plunge pools or jacuzzis. Details include hand-painted tiles from Vietri sul Mare, smart TVs, Nespresso machines and bath products by Ortigia.
DINING Breakfast is a strong start served at Velaris: try the sfogliatella riccia pastry with an espresso made in a traditional cuccumella. Bluh Furore, the hotel’s Michelinstar restaurant, is more formal with creative tasting menus by chef Vincenzo Russo (there’s a vegetarian menu too). Lunch is served in Acquarasa, the allday dining restaurant, where I recommend the pasta Nerano and zucchini alla scapece, served with a side helping of views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Aperitivo time at the Ria bar is a highlight.
Petramore Spa.
SPA The pampering Petramare spa has a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, swimming pool with hydromassage and cold plunge pool. Outside, there’s a Kneipp hydrotherapy circuit featuring hot and cold water pools, an al fresco fitness corner and infinity pool. I tried the signature Head Spa – a deeply relaxing treatment incorporating exfoliation, head and facial massage and masks.
Furore Grand Hotel.
DO Walk down to the small fishing village of Furore (1,000 steps from the hotel) where there’s a picturesque fjord and small pebble beach.
DON’T Miss the complimentary shuttle service to Amalfi, which runs four times a day.
VERDICT Heavenly. Furore Grand Hotel immerses guests in the glamour of the Amalfi coast without the crowds and hefty price tag. www.furoregrandhotel.com; @furoregrandhotel
