8 Menswear Essentials For Match Day

What to wear to the match and beyond…

Watching a live match is one of the highlights of spring in Ireland. If you’re lucky enough to score tickets for the Aviva Stadium or Croke Park, or indeed any other outdoor venue, your spectator outfit needs to be both warm and stylish.

A warm and weatherproof down jacket is worth the investment. As an alternative, consider an ultra-light DOWN GILET  from Japanese high street brand Uniqlo (€49.90; www.uniqlo.com), worn under a woollen coat…

… and accessorised with a statement scarf: try Acne Studios at Brown Thomas.

Wear DENIM JEANS with a bit of stretch for added flexibility. Arnotts is stocking 7 For All Mankind denim: try Slimmy Luxe Performance jeans (slim yet roomy) cut from soft, recycled stretch denim, €220. SNEAKERS are a comfortable footwear choice: Adidas Originals Stan Smith sneakers are back in style, while Converse Chuck 70 sneakers are arguably still one of the most iconic styles ever. As an alternative, choose Mango’s Man’s OrthoLite elastic sneakers. Wear with a good pair of socks (Decathlon has a huge selection; www.decathlon.ie), to keep you warm and comfortable in the stands.

A CASUAL SHIRT, denim or corduroy will serve you well, (from €119.90, at Calvin Klein at Dundrum Town Centre) as will a CARDIGAN layered over a long-sleeve T-shirt.

A pair of timeless Rayban Clubmaster sunglasses (€145, at Ray-Ban, 32 Grafton Street, Dublin 2)

A baseball cap, (€321; www.lockhatters.com) will never go out of style. And finally, as we are talking about outdoor sporting events in Ireland, don’t forget to take a suitable umbrella, for that dash to the Dart.

PREP SKIN with Oxmantown Skincare Vetiver & Sage Beard & Face Balm (€22; www.oxmantownskincare.ie). This features aromatic plant oils to hydrate the skin, plus conditioning shea butter. The Handmade Soap Company’s new vegan men’s range includes a natural Beard Oil that smells great, with bright bitter orange and pink pepper. There are also soap, shower gel and balm to match, (€18; www.thehandmadesoapcompany.ie.)

Le Labo Beard Oil is a luxury, but it smoothes and moisturises the wiriest beard or moustache, leaving skin softly scented with lavander, violet and tonka bean (€62, at Brown Thomas.)
