6 Series To Add To Your Autumn Watchlist

From thrillers to the return of a beloved romcom, there’s something for everyone …

Boots | on Netflix

93% on Rotten Tomatoes and not-Pentagon-approved, Boots has transported audiences in this emotional coming-of-age true story – which touches on very poignant topics for today. Based on the true story of former US Marine Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine, Boots is praised for its characters and charm. It follows the story of bullied gay teen Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer (13 Reasons Why), who joins the Marine Corps with his best friend despite the risks, racism and illegality of being gay in the military. In boot camp they experience profound personal change amid danger, as their platoon confronts both literal and figurative landmines. Also starring Liam Oh (The Thing About Harry), Blake Burt (Pitch Perfect 2), Dominic Goodman (First Kill), Cedrick Cooper (The Comeback) and more rising stars that are worth a watch.

The Last Frontier | Apple TV

Australian actor Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer, The Devil All the Time) leads this new series as a US Marshal who must protect his town in the outskirts of Alaska while he investigates a plane crash that set free multiple fugitives, now on the loose. Also starring Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia), Haley Bennett (Hillbilly Elegy) and Simone Kessell (Yellowjackets), catch the first two episodes on October 10, with new episodes every Friday until December 5. If you liked Hijack with Idris Elba or Chief of War with Jason Momoa, you’re bound to love this.

The Iris Affair | NOW TV

From the mastermind behind Golden Globe award-winning series Luther (with the aforementioned Idris Elba), this eight-part series starting on October 16 is directed by Terry McDonough (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) and Sarah O’Gorman (The Witcher, A Gentleman in Moscow). It stars Emmy-nominated Tom Hollander (The White Lotus, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans) and Niamh Algar (Mary & George, The Virtues) as two brilliant minds playing a deadly game of hide and seek across Italy, from a remote cabin in Sardinia to the bustling streets of Rome. Also starring Kristofer Hivju (Game of ThronesForce Majeure) and Harry Lloyd (Marcella).

Lazarus | Amazon Prime

Prolific writer and creator Harlan Coben – the brains behind hit shows Shelter, Safe and Tell No One and many others – has yet another thriller to tell. Sam Claflin (Peaky Blinders, The Hunger Games) plays a forensic psychologist investigating cold case murders after returning to his family home following the death of his father, played by Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning legend Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Emma … the list goes on!). All six episodes are available, just in time for spooky season.

Nobody Wants This | Netflix

The unlikely couple of an agnostic podcaster and rabbi, expertly played by Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, won over audiences and critics alike in the first season – both were nominated for Golden Globes, SAG and Critics Choice Awards – but how long can their honeymoon phase last? Out now, new cast members include Leighton Meester (Brody’s wife IRL) and Seth Rogen, who’s become a star of the small screen thanks to his critically acclaimed show The Studio.

Down Cemetery Road | Apple TV

From the executive producers of Slow Horses, Emma Thompson plays a private investigator looking for a missing child. With the help of a concerned neighbour, played by Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Jane Eyre), they uncover secrets and a military conspiracy even emerges, causing chaos in Oxford’s suburbs. Also starring Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards award-winning actor Adam Godley (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Theory of Everything), Lizzy Caplan’s husband Tom Riley (The Nevers, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window) and Adeel Akhtar (Fool Me Once, Sherwood), we’re looking forward to curling up to this.
