the much-loved former céline designer launches her namesake label in september, but these are the brands we’d recommend in the meantime …
Clean but never austere, sophisticated without being twee, feminine without being girlish, we could spend hours quantifying the magic of a Phoebe Philo design. And, while the internet went into a tailspin last week when Philo announced she will be launching a namesake fashion label in September, we’re concentrating on how to get our hit in the meantime.
In essence, there is no quick-fix alternative to Phoebe Phlio’s much-loved designs at Céline, however, there are brands that show shades of Philo at times (partially because of the designer’s influence on the fashion industry as a whole and what it means to make clothes that really work for the contemporary woman). We’ve highlighted some of our favourites below.

sir the label
The Sydney-based label is popular right now thanks to its body-skimming dresses, however it’s the brand’s black and white slip dresses that caught our eye as they nod to the Céline spring summer 2016 collection. (We recently spotted the original dress on Danish influencer Pernille Teisbaek.) us.sirthelabel.com.
by malene birger
Founded in Copenhagen in 2003, By Malene Birger is the perfect blend of bohemian style and Scandinavian clean lines. This season the brand is behind some of our favourite pieces that scream quite luxury – from tailored trench coats to playful calf-hair handbags. www.bymalenebirger.com.
joseph
A perennial favourite, Joseph is a mid-range brand that never goes out of style. Specifically, the label hones in on particular items, like blazers, upgrading the design each season instead of starting from scratch, meaning you can buy their pieces in good faith that they’ll always be in vogue. Add one of the label’s wool stretch suits to basket for spring. www.joseph-fashion.com.
raey
British brand Raey has taken off lately – largely thanks to its clever knitwear, sharp tailoring and lust-worthy coats. Its collections are seasonless and conscious, and the brand’s latest imagery, pictured above, even has echoes of those much-loved Juergen Teller campaigns at Céline. Shop it at Matches Fashion.
the row
The Row, founded by Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, gets a nod for its exquisite silk dresses, virgin wool coats and cashmere knits which are the last word in demure, sensible luxury with just a pinch of androgyny. You can now shop the label at Brown Thomas, too. www.therow.com.
