4 Cool Transitional Outfit Ideas We’ll Be Trying As August Fades To September

The best transitional outfits for August combine our favourite key pieces from summer and autumn …

Barn jackets and headscarves

Right now, the outfits tempting us have one foot in the door of summer, one foot in pre-fall. Perhaps nothing sums this up better than a transitional favourite like a barn jacket teamed with a printed, or paisley, headscarf that hints at beach days (and a late summer glow). A rich pop of colour – such as cherry red or Yves Klein blue – feels like a welcome refresh after a summer of whimsical whites. We’re taking inspiration from French style influencer Alice Pilate whose August collaboration with New York brand Alex Mill focuses on classic buys with a twist. We’re noting the Smarties-coded ballet flats.

White jeans and zebra print ballerinas

There’s nothing like a key change to a decadent print like zebra to signify the turning of the season. Right now, we love the idea of teaming textured zebra accessories – like these ponyhair-effect ballerinas from Arket, pictured – with excellent white jeans and a navy tee. When the season progresses, you can add a trench.

Suede jackets and basket bags

A novel way to approach transitional styling is an autumnal brown suede jacket teamed with a basket bag. Up the ante by pairing these with indigo denim (shorts can work too, if the temperature still calls for it). Finish with a cap-sleeve white T-shirt to keep things fitting for August. We love the idea of a pointelle-cotton style for something a bit different.

Utility pants and dark stripes

A cool pair of cargo pants makes returning to long trousers a more appealing proposition. Rather than teaming utility trousers with pretty white blouses, as we did at the start of the summer, temper them for now with dark stripes. Think: boat neck tops in cobalt blue and white, or navy and red, as inspired by French brand Matteau. We’ve noticed great dupes at H&M or pick up an authentic marinière on Vinted.
