Perhaps we’ve finally reached peak minimalism, but the new season’s staples are brimming with personality. Gone are the standard shades of ecru and white, the total lack of print and the blanketing of ‘quiet luxury‘. Rather, the pieces that will form the building blocks of your autumn season look are distinctive. Think: shirting that eschews typical blue for jaunty shades of red, cargo trousers as an alternative to indigo denims and jacquard jackets that take their cues from vintage kimonos (influenced, no doubt, by buzzy designers such as Conner Ives). Upgraded Boat Shoes
Coastal-inspired boat shoes have been trending the past few seasons but now we’re seeing more distinctive types come to the fore. Think: mocha shades of leather rather than pale suede (more wearable), croc-finishes, leopard prints and colourful laces. The key is to find a pair that look lived-in and exude a certain kind of slouch.

Poppy Red Shirting
Shades of poppy, tomato and vermillion are the coolest kind of accents, according to THE GLOSS Style Editor Aislinn Coffey. We love the idea of a red shirt as a jaunty upgrade to classic blue. Team it with a white tee and white jeans for a streamlined look. Beware of finding the right shade of red, however: this look is about zinging poppy shades, not deep reds.

Khaki Cargo Pants
If you’re searching for an alternative to jeans, let the current crop of utility-inspired trousers provide some novelty. After a sell-out summer, Citizens of Humanity’s viral Flight Pants have been upgraded for the new season in an autumn-appropriate dark green. Team with a barn jacket and kitten heels for a high-low look.

Jacquard Jackets
The move on from stealth wealth? We’re seeing a stealth kind of bohemia grip the fashion world now. It’s all about simple basics mixed with items of unknown provenance. (Could they be vintage? The fact that they’re not easily identifiable is a definite part of the appeal.) A case in point is the jacquard jacket, see below, from Rixo. Teamed with jeans and a tee, it’s a vintage-leaning look that feels entirely contemporary.
