Tired of straight legs? Not tempted by flares? Considering reviving the skinny jean? Read this first: if you’re looking to switch up your usual denim rotation then the jeans of the season might be for you. Barrel leg jeans are the most in vogue shape to invest in now. According to Heajun Park, Womenswear Design Director EMEA at 7 For All Mankind, they are the wild card style that is worth trying. “I think the idea of barrel jeans can be a little intimidating at first, but I think this shape has a universal appeal and suits all body types. The narrow waist and tapered leg is flattering on curves but equally can add volume and proportion to athletic figures,” she says.
Characterised by a narrow waist and a curved leg that tapers at the end, barrel jeans tend to be the little sister of denim, eclipsed by the more popular straight leg, or more familiar, bootcut or flared styles. However, they are a firm favourite of THE GLOSS Digital Editor Síomha Connolly. “I wear barrel jeans a lot, they’re an office favourite. I wear them with a black wool jumper and black ankle boots. I find that style to be a bit more elevated compared to standard straight jeans,” she says. Connolly’s tip? “Always wear them with a pair of ankle boots that sit a bit higher on the ankle so that no leg is showing,” she says. Although barrel jeans are thought of as modern trend, that’s not entirely the case. Connolly favours Totême’s pair which has its roots in the past. The brand’s high rise barrel leg jeans, below, were inspired by vintage pairs that Elin Kling, co-founder of Totême, already had in her wardrobe. Shop a selection of styles below.
