A must-attend event in Ireland’s horticultural calendar …
“We’re thrilled to see the Festival of Gardens and Nature return to Ballintubbert House, Co Laois for its third year, continuing to evolve as a thoughtful and inspiring gathering,” says co-founder and landscape architect Catherine FitzGerald.
Make a diary note of May 2-3 when visitors can expect a vibrant weekend of gardening, food, art and engaging talks on sustainable living against the stunning backdrop of the 14-acre estate. Its alchemy is in the mix of events and interesting people, believes FitzGerald. “What makes the festival so special is its ability to bring together such a diverse community, from gardeners and growers to artists, cooks and environmental thinkers, all connected by a shared respect for the natural world. Set within restored organic gardens, it offers a space to learn and reflect on how we live, grow and care for the landscapes around us.”
This year’s line-up of speakers includes Rory O’Connell, Alannah Weston, Dan Pearson, Anja Murray, Adam Nicolson, John Anderson, Jimi Blake, Katy Merrington, Mick Kelly, Mary Keen, Isabel Bannerman and Brendan Dunford. They will discuss issues such as Trees for the Future, Land Restoration, Rethinking Beauty in Nature and Horticulture as Social Enterprise, and more specialised explorations including plant symbiosis, roses and planting combinations. On hand will be some of the top plant nurseries, including Howbert & Mays, Mount Venus Nursery, Leaf & Petal, Individual Plants Nursery and Boyne Valley Nursery.
The focus of the event is the festival’s How-To stage where practical sessions will be led by Sarah Raven, who will discuss growing exceptional cut flowers. Jo Thompson will provide inspiration on creating a romantic garden and Klaus Laitenberger will also give helpful tips for improving soil health.
Art will be an integral part of the festival too. The renowned botanical artist Isik Güner will give a detailed talk and demonstration, while acclaimed landscape painter Andrew Gifford will paint live en plein air.
Cooking demonstrations will be led by Thomasina Miers, complemented by food provided by Julia’s Lobster Truck, Ballymaloe pre-ordered picnics by Sinéad Gorman, Neighbourhood Coffee (Carlow) and Daily Dose (Abbeyleix), serving gluten-free baked goods and speciality coffee.
This all adds up to an immersive experience with tempting retail therapy to boot – expect to find homeware, clothing, antiques, tools, architectural salvage and art. Adams Auctioneers will also showcase garden pieces ahead of an upcoming specialist auction. We’ll see you there! @ballintubbert
