A recent survey conducted by Hastings Hotels revealed that 40 percent of women across Ireland admit to feeling stressed in their daily lives, particularly those aged 45 to 54. Work responsibilities are the leading cause, with other significant stressors being money worries, health concerns and family-related pressures. Fortunately, small steps can lead to significant improvement, from proper sleep to spending time in nature. Over 90 per cent of participants agreed a break away, especially a hotel stay, enhanced their wellbeing. The survey found that frequent mini escapes have a better impact on mental wellbeing than waiting for an annual holiday. While the majority choose to be with their partner on these escapes, solo travel is a favoured option for one in ten.

Hotel Villa Luppis, Veneto, Italy
This interesting report reflects the rise in solo travel as a general travel trend. Just You, one of the original specialists in solo travel, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025, has noted a 20 per cent increase in bookings in the last year. It offers over 70 destinations and guided touring holidays for those travelling alone – Austria and Albania are new additions. Its Festive Collection includes a glossy Italian Christmas, a five-day escape at the Countess Luppis’ boutique hotel (a former Benedictine monastery), on the border of the Veneto and Fruili regions. Included are day trips to Venice and Padua, flights, half board and Christmas Day lunch, from £1,849.

There’s a misconception that solo travel means you want to channel Greta Garbo and be totally alone. In Ireland, the demand for Travel Department’s solo-friendly holidays has doubled since 2019, says Claire Doherty, Product Director. “Many solo travellers are eager to meet new people and forge friendships while discovering new destinations. Travelling in a group can feel safer and more comfortable, especially for those who may be hesitant about embarking on solo adventures.”
On my radar to brighten up those dark February days is its seven-night Highlights of Madeira tour, €1,999, which includes flights, transfers, tours and ample free time to unwind and explore the Portuguese island independently. I find switching off the phone and having a solo spa day is also beneficial: try the “Restore for One” offer at The Cliff at Lyons, Co Kildare. This includes a treatment and lunch in gorgeous surroundings, from €150.
