Loved by TikTokers and fashion insiders alike, the tank top is the perfect heatwave staple piece. But it also played a major role on the autumn winter runways …
The tank top is back. According to fashion index Lyst, demand for white ribbed tank tops has increased 66 per cent, with brands such as Versace and Rick Owens amongst the top searched.
At Net-a-Porter, the luxury etailer has invested in the tank top as one of the key pieces of spring summer 2022. It’s all part of the post-pandemic “new world wardrobe”; that is, the favouring of refined and luxurious basics rather than fleeting trend pieces. Something many of us embraced after lockdown.

Chloé’s scalloped wool tanks are paired with art-school ankle length skirts and suede clogs, a warm and fuzzy take on the 1970s. At Totême, it’s all about bodycon – tank tops are paired with slit-hem skinny trousers.
Meanwhile on TikTok, generation Z heroes the simple white tank as part of the Y2K explosion. (You know it’s reached luxury when even Net-a-Porter is styling out parachute pants: god help us all.) Even Anine Bing has gotten in on the act, pairing up a tank with tube skirts, point-toe heels and perennial noughties favourite, bootcut jeans.
Equally, for autumn winter 2022, designers leaned into the staple piece, heroing it at shows such as Prada, Acne and at Bottega Veneta – which was an out-and-out dedication to the humble white tank.
