Kitty Coles’ 4 Day Food And Drinks Guide To Dublin

Fall in love with Dublin all over again …

People often ask the biggest difference between London and Dublin. For me, it’s the sea and mountains, as well as the people. The ability to escape the city so quickly is undoubtedly one of the best things about it. Here, you can feel like you’ve left the hustle and bustle completely, even if just for the day. @kittycoles

DAY 1

To start: Stay at The Devlin, The Dean or an Airbnb around Portobello.

Coffee: The Fumbally, followed by lunch down the road at Assassination Custard, a tiny place with limited bookings (usually Wednesday to Friday at 12pm and 1.30pm). Check their Instagram before going.

Pints: Head to nearby John Fallon’s “The Capstan Bar” in The Liberties, Dublin 8.

Wine: Marlowe & Co, also in Dublin 8, has delicious wine and snacks on a Thursday or Friday evening.

Or: Walk into the centre of town to The Palace Bar, The Long Hall or Kehoe’s, all Dublin 2.

To finish: If you’re full from lunch, go to Grogan’s, South William Street for a toastie or Bambino, Stephens Street Lower for a slice (or three) of pizza; both Dublin 2, then back to Dublin 8 to Bar Pez for a night-cap.

DAY 2

To start: Grab Scéal Bakery pastries from The Wine Pair.

Shop: Walk into town for some retail therapy …

Lou’s Lot, George’s Street Arcade, Dublin 2.
Industry & Co, Drury Street, Dublin 2.
Irish Design Shop, Drury Street, Dublin 2.
Indigo & Cloth, Essex Street East, Dublin 2 (also great for coffee).
Stable of Ireland, Loot, Dopl, Brown Thomas

Coffee: Kaph, Clement & Pekoe or any of the 3fe spots are great. I love sitting outside Kaph when the sun’s shining.

Lunch: Book a late lunch at Lena then explore The Lennox Street Grocer, both in Portobello, plus some cute shops nearby.

Stroll: Through Trinity College, Dublin 2.

To finish: Squeeze in a Guinness Storehouse trip at St James’s Gate, Dublin 8.

DAY 3

To start: Elliott’s Bakery, on Arran Street East for breakfast or a bit further to Proper Order Coffee Co in Smithfield, both Dublin 7, followed by a walk around Phoenix Park.

Lunch: Book lunch at Fish Shop in Smithfield for oysters, fish and chips or a roast fish with green salad.

Treat: Enjoy a gelato from Sorrento’s and a drink at Walsh’s, both Stoneybatter, Dublin 7.

Or: Travel north to The Gravediggers, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, for coddle and what many say is the best Guinness in the city.

To finish: End the day with live music at The Cobblestone and a trip to Little Italy next door, both Smithfield.

DAY 4

To start: Venture out of the city to Roundwood Stores in Co Wicklow for a coffee and breakfast before a refreshing walk around Glendalough.

Lunch: Next door at The Coach House for chicken pie.

Or: Stop by Johnnie Fox’s, Glencullen, Co Dublin, for a huge bowl of mussels and chips.

Stay: If you want to stay longer or head outside Dublin, I highly recommend Samsú Cabins, Co Westmeath, about an hour outside the city. Two cabins in the middle of nowhere. I stayed last summer and loved it.

Tip: GoCar is ideal to drive to Greystones, Howth, Monkstown or Wicklow.
